Gold Medal Count: Athletes That Will Help US Pull Away from China in Day 7

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

The battle between the United States and China for the most gold medals in the Olympics is neck and neck, but a few athletes could make the difference.

At the 2008 Beijing Games, the USA led with 110 overall medals, but China easily won the race for the most gold medals by a total of 51-36.

This year, the two countries are far ahead of the rest of the pack, but are about even in both gold and total medals. Fortunately, the Americans have a few events left in Day 7 to help pull away from their rivals.

Reese Hoffa, Men's Shot Put

There are three Americans in the finals of this competition that could all contend for a medal. Along with Hoffa, Christian Cantwell and Ryan Whiting are also tough challengers.

However, Hoffa has performed the best so far in London. His opening throw of 21.36 meters leads all competitors. He also has the second-highest personal best in the field with a throw of 22.43 meters.

Hopefully, one of these men will make their country proud and take home gold.

Missy Franklin, 200-Meter Backstroke

The teen sensation already has won two gold medals in London and is looking to add more to her mantle.

Once again, her toughest challenger might be a teammate. Elizabeth Beisel finished with the top time in qualifying. However, Franklin is at her best in backstroke and won the 100-meter version of the race earlier in the week.

She has struggled at times to close out the race, but she seems to be getting better at pacing herself in every event. The good news is that if Franklin does falter, Beisel should be right there for the win.

Michael Phelps, 100-Meter Butterfly

In the last individual event in his Olympic career, Phelps is ready to close out strong. Fortunately, the 100-meter butterfly is one of his best events.

The two competitors to watch out for are Chad le Clos and Milorad Cavic. Le Clos narrowly defeated Phelps in the 200-meter butterfly this week, while Cavic was the swimmer who lost to Phelps by only .01 seconds in this event in Beijing.

Fortunately, Phelps should be well-rested for this race and come out strong.

Cullen Jones, 50-Meter Freestyle

The most exciting race in swimming is finally upon us as the competitors try to be the first to travel only one length of the pool.

Jones was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that won in Beijing and finished with the silver medal here in London. Still, he is one of the fastest in the world in a short sprint like this.

He tied with world record holder Cesar Cielo for the best time in qualifying, but a great race will allow the American to pull off the upset.
