Olympic Soccer Schedule 2012: Must-See Men's Quarterfinal Matchups
Day 8 from the 2012 London Olympics will feature four tremendous men's soccer quarterfinal matchups, with a trip to the medal stages on the line in each.
All eyes will be on Great Britain against South Korea, as the hosts attempt to make the semifinals and compete for a gold medal.
Meanwhile, Mexico will look to continue its shutout streak at the Games against a surprising Senegal squad.
Without further ado, here are the must-see men's quarterfinal matches in London this weekend.
Mexico vs. Senegal, Saturday, August 4 at 9:30 a.m. ET
Mexico and Senegal will go head-to-head in the second men's soccer quarterfinal on Day 8 of the 2012 London Olympics. Mexico won its group with seven points through three matches, while Senegal rode two draws and a shutout of Uruguay to advance to the knockout stages this summer.
Fans should be watching to see if the Mexicans will concede its first goal of the Olympic Games. Through the tournament's first three matches, Mexico has outscored its opponents 3-0. Senegal is a serious threat to become the first team to find the back of the net against Mexico, though. The African nation drew with host nation Great Britain last week and has allowed just two goals so far.
The player to watch in this matchup is Moussa Konate. The 19-year-old forward has scored all four of Senegal's goals at the Olympics and is a extremely difficult cover in the final third. If Mexico hope to advance to the semifinals in London, they will need to contain Konate, who has scored in every match at the Games so far.
For Mexico, the offensive spark must come from Giovani dos Santos, who scored twice against Gabon in the group stage. This matchup will likely be determined by which striker can make more of an impact and break through. Although dos Santos seems to have the edge, Konate's play so far is hard to bet against. With that said, I still like Mexico to move on because of its defensive dominance.
Great Britain vs. South Korea, Saturday, August 4 at 2:30 p.m. ET
The hosts have yet to lose at the Olympics this summer, winning two and drawing one of its group matches. The British have been led by striker Daniel Sturridge, who has scored twice in London, most recently in Great Britain's win over Uruguay.
The crowd is sure to be raucous in support of the hosts, which should make for an excellent watch. In addition to the atmosphere, South Korea will field a solid, defensive-minded team capable of pulling off the upset. I like Great Britain's home pitch advantage to give them the edge in this matchup. As hosts it seems like a guarantee that they at least medal, and they would be guaranteed a shot at bronze if they make it past the Koreans.
At this stage in the Olympic men's soccer tournament, every game is must-see television, but since the Americans failed to qualify on the men's side, fans and viewers back across the pond should be tuning into this one to check out America's ally on the pitch.
