Olympic Results 2012: Analyzing Day 7 Medal Outcomes in London

Patrick ClarkeJun 2, 2018

Day 7 at the 2012 London Olympics has produced several notable medal results from a variety of sports, including men's rowing and shooting.

New Zealand has been extraordinary on the water so far at the Games, and has already added a few gold medals to their total count.

However, the Kiwis aren't the only ones celebrating Day 7 achievements at the 2012 Olympics. Here we analyze some of the most intriguing medal outcomes from Friday.

Mahe Drysdale Wins Rowing Gold

New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale brought home top honors in Day 7's men's rowing single sculls final. Drysdale finished with a winning time of six minutes, 57.82 seconds, which was nearly two seconds ahead of silver medalist Ondrej Synek.

Alan Campbell won another medal for the host nation, finishing in third to claim bronze for Great Britain. Drysdale was the favorite coming into the final, having finished the fastest in the heats, quarterfinals and semifinals.

Rowing flies under the radar at the Olympic Games, but Drysdale's performance is one of the most dominant we have seen during the event's first week.

Sergei Martynov Shines in Shooting Competition

Sergei Martynov won gold on Day 7 in the men's 50-meter rifle, prone shooting, earning an impressive total score of 705.5. The native of Belarus out-classed the competition in London, setting a final world record with a 105.5 on Day 7.

Belgium's Lionel Cox and Slovenia's Rajmond Debevec took silver and bronze respectively. Cox won by a slim margin of 0.2. Debevec rallied in the final, scoring a 105 to lock up a podium finish.

Martynov's final world record is deserving of some discussion. Similarly to rowing, shooting is a sport that often gets swept under the rug at the Summer Olympics. It's unfortunate, considering how talented these Olympians truly are, and the pride they bring their countries in the shadows of the big-time Olympic sports.

New Zealand Continues Rowing Dominance

Eric Murray and Hamish Bond cruised to victory in the men's pair rowing on Day 7 in London, finishing in a time of six minutes, 16.65 seconds. The pair from New Zealand finished nearly five seconds ahead of silver medalists Germain Chardin and Dorian Moretelette of France.

As for bronze, just as Alan Campbell won the final piece of hardware in the men's single sculls, the British team of George Nash and William Satch achieved bronze for the host nation. Nash and Satch nearly won silver, but still managed a medal nonetheless, finishing almost five seconds ahead of the fourth-place Italian pair.

The Kiwis' rowing success continues to be the story of the rowing competitions in London, while the host nation is surely proud to boast a few bronze medals in the sport on Day 7.
