Yohan Blake 2012 Olympics: Results, Analysis and More

Jun 7, 2018

When it comes to titles, "World's Fastest Man" is a pretty cool thing to put on a resume. That's exactly what Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake will try to claim at the 2012 Summer Olympics

Since the 2008 Olympics, Usain Bolt has been the biggest name in the track world, but Blake has emerged as a legitimate contender to steal gold. Blake's rivalry with fellow countryman Usain Bolt is one of the most interesting storylines heading into the Games.

Blake will have the opportunity to medal three times—the 100-meter, 200-meter and the 400-meter relay.

We will have full analysis of Blake's performance in London as he begins his journey for gold beginning August 4 with 100-meter preliminaries.

(Note: Article will be updated as results become final.)

100-Meter Dash

1 of 3

The 100 is Yohan Blake's strongest event, and the competition between him and Usain Bolt should make for one of the most electric finishes in all of the Olympics.

Blake comes to London with all kinds of momentum and confidence after a strong showing at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Blake was able to claim the title of world champion with his time of 9.92 seconds.

Blake's personal-best time in the event was set earlier this year when he ran a 9.75-second 100 in his native Jamaica on June 29 at the World Challenge, where he took first place.

With the title of "World's Fastest Man" and an Olympic gold medal on the line, both Blake and Bolt should be at their very best.

100 Meter Finals: 9.73

What can anyone say? Usain Bolt is the fastest man that has ever lived. He wins the 100 meter dash in 9.63 and Blake would have beaten every other person in history with his 9.73, but not Bolt.

He settles for a silver medal as Jamaica claims the top two podium spots.

What a race.

100 Meter Semifinals: 9.85

This final is going to be epic. Blake punched his ticket with a sick 9.85 in his heat. He blew past Tyson Gay in the last 40 meters to claim the race and a spot in a star-studded final later today.

Every major name in sprinting over the past four years will be in this final: Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin, Blake, Asafa Powell and the winner will be the fastest man on the planet.

Round 1:  10.00

Blake finished first in his heat with a 10 second flat time in Round 1 which qualifies him for the Semifinals.  He bested fellow-countryman and current world record holder Usain Bolt by 0.09 seconds.  A pair of Americans, Ryan Bailey and Justin Gatlin, were the only two sprinters to beat his time with a 9.88 and 9.97 respectively.

200-Meter Dash

2 of 3

Although not as anticipated as the 100, the 200 will be another opportunity for Yohan Blake to earn a medal.

Blake's top time in the 200 came in 2011 at the Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium, where he ran a 19.26. His top time in 2012 was run at the World Challenge in Jamaica, where he ran a 19.91-second 200.

Blake will need to be at his absolute best to win the event. Usain Bolt ran a 19.40-second time at the World Championships in Daegu, where Blake did not participate in the event.

Gold: Usain Bolt, Jamaica

Silver: Yohan Blake, Jamaica

Bronze: Warren Weir, Jamaica

Blake and countrymen Usain Bolt flew right out of the gates immediately separating from the pack. It was a two-man race throughout the contest, with Bolt getting the better of Blake and earning his second straight gold medal in the event.

Blake would finish .06 seconds after Bolt with a time of 19.44 seconds. Jamaica's Warren Weir would finish .40 seconds after Blake to take the bronze medal in a clean podium sweep for the nation.

Round 1: 20.38

Blake won his opening round heat impressively, even topping Usain Bolt's round one time by 0.01. The Jamaican will next run in Wednesday's men's 200-meter dash semifinals.

Although Bolt owns the world record in this event, Blake's performance in the men's 100-meter dash surely proved he's capable of finishing towards the top.

Semifinals: 20.01

Blake easily qualified for the final by winning his heat. He'll likely be a little better in the final, and he'll have to be to beat countryman Usain Bolt.

Bolt easily won his heat with a 20.18, but he coasted at the end.

This will be a tough one for Blake to win.

4x100-Meter Relay

3 of 3

With Jamaica claiming both Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, the 4x100-meter relay almost isn't fair.

Jamaica will be the unquestioned favorite in the event after posting a world record at the World Championships in 2011. The team of Bolt, Blake, Nesta Carter and Michael Frater ran a blistering time of 37.04 seconds and have a chance to improve upon the time and win a gold medal.

Barring any slip-ups with the baton, the Jamaicans' depth will lead them to their second consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event (the team took gold in 2008 with a time of 37.10 seconds).

Gold Medal: Jamaica - 36.84 seconds (WR)

Silver Medal: United States - 37.04 seconds

Bronze Medal: Trinidad and Tobago - 38.12 seconds*

Yohan Blake and Jamaica made history Saturday night at Olympic Stadium.

The Jamaican men's track team set the world record in the 4x100-meter relay, winning gold with the time of 36.84 seconds. The U.S. was on their heels with a blistering time of 37.04, which tied the previous world record.

Blake ran the third leg of the event and kept the Jamaicans neck-and-neck with the Americans, who ran a stellar race. Blake's perfect hand-off to Bolt as the anchor was all he needed to do to ensure a Jamaican gold.

The gold medal is Blake's first ever and won't be his last.

Update: Friday, Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. ET by Tim Daniels

Jamaica has qualified for the finals by winning its qualifying heat. Blake was joined by Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Kemar Bailey-Cole in the victory run. The Jamaican squad posted a time of 37.39 even without Usain Bolt.

Bolt will return for the gold medal race. The combination of Blake and Bolt makes the Jamaican team the favorite to emerge victorious. It remains unclear which of the other runners will join them in the final lineup at this point.

Blake has been enjoying a successful Games. Another gold would be a nice way to wrap things up.
