Olympic Basketball Scores 2012: 5 Lessons Learned from Day 6 Matchups
Day 6 of the Olympics is completed with men's basketball having completed their third game in pool play.
Throughout the day, there were many exciting games, highlighted by Russia's last second three-pointer to beat Brazil in the fourth game of the day.
Results included:
- France 82, Lithuania 74
- Australia 81, China 61
- Argentina 92, Tunisia 69
- Russia 75, Brazil 74
- Spain 79, Great Britain 78
- USA 156, Nigeria 73
But, throughout the day's competition, we learned a lot about some teams and learned what not to do from other teams.
Here's a look at five things we learned from Day 6 of Olympic basketball.
Team USA Is Really GOOD
1 of 5Surprise, surprise, the U.S. is really good.
The U.S. had the most points by a team in Olympic history as they dominated Nigeria.
They scored more points in the first half (78) than Nigeria scored in the entire game.
Carmelo Anthony led the team with 37 points, including 10-for-12 from three-point range. Russell Westbrook also added 21 points.
What they U.S. showed us in this game is that they can score in bunches. And, if a team fails to play defense on them, they'll make the other team pay.
Honestly, after this result, I don't see how other teams won't come into the game with the U.S. offense in the back of their mind.
Spain Has Some Holes
2 of 5Spain are supposed to be the second best team in the world.
On Thursday, they didn't look anywhere close to it as Great Britain almost pulled a major upset.
And, they did it with a majority of the scoring coming from two players—Luol Deng and Joel Freeland.
Spain entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead and were outscored by 11 points in the final quarter.
The Spanish have to get things together before their next game against Russia.
Still, they'll make it to the knockout round, but they look beatable against teams other than the U.S. now more than ever.
France Primed for No. 2 Seed in Pool A
3 of 5With recent wins over Argentina and Lithuania, France only has the bottom two of Pool A before the knockout round.
The French, led by Tony Parker, have looked good in their two wins and are showing they will compete for a medal.
Even though they have a win over Argentina, France is still currently in third because of point differential. But, Argentina still has the U.S. and the French have Tunisia and Nigeria.
Russia Is a Major Surprise
4 of 5Like Spain, Russia is 3-0, setting up a great matchup on Saturday.
For many Olympic basketball fans, Russia being undefeated thus far is surprising.
They pulled out a surprise win over Brazil and dominated Great Britain and China.
At the very least, most would've thought they'd have at least one loss.
One thing the game against Brazil showed us was the Russians never think they're out of it.
And that can be dangerous in the knockout round.
No Team Is Close to the U.S.
5 of 5The U.S. are head and shoulders above the rest of the field.
This team full of NBA stars is getting used to playing with each other, and they're getting better with each game.
Although their exhibition game with Spain was close, the U.S. will have no problem beating them if and when the teams play again.
Carmelo Anthony has shown he can be depended on to consistently make shots, and the U.S. keeps going to him because of it.
