Great Britain vs. Canada Women's Olympic Soccer: Team GB's Dominance Won't Cease
Great Britain is riding more momentum into the quarterfinals than any other country.
Team GB will face off against Canada in the first win-or-go-home match of the 2012 London Summer Olympics. On their home turf on Friday, expect the British to advance to the semis.
Great Britain is coming off a huge win against a strong Brazil side, and this squad will ride the momentum to a victory over the Canadians.
Mike Collett of Reuters reported that Team GB coach Hope Powell talked about the home crowd and avoiding the temptation to look ahead to a matchup with the United States. She said:
"The atmosphere was electric. We got off to a great start but had to concentrate and do the job. But all I am concentrating on now is the quarter-final with Canada. That’s the only focus, but we want this to go on as long as possible.
"
As long as the British maintain that focus, they’ll be a difficult out.
Steph Houghton has been one of the most dominant goal scorers of the Olympics. She’s one of just three women to record at least three goals in the group stage.
Of course, the most dominant scorer has been Canada’s Melissa Tancredi. She’s the only player with four goals in the tournament, but Great Britain boasts the defense to shut her down.
Brazil’s Marta was one of the most feared goal scorers in the field, but the Brits focused their defensive efforts on her and they goose egged the Brazilians. The British will likely use the same strategy against Tancredi. Without the woman who’s scored four of their six goals thus far, the Canadians will be lost.
Not a single team has scored on Great Britain through three games and Canada would be lucky to crack this defense once, let alone win the match.
