Olympic Tennis 2012 Results: Day 5 Scores, Analysis & More
Day 5 of the tennis tournament at the London 2012 Olympics set the quarterfinal matchups and some of the sport’s biggest stars will be competing to keep their gold-medal hopes alive.
Rodger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray all graced the grass courts at Wimbledon.
Federer faced Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in his third-round match. Istomin put up a valiant effort and gave Federer trouble in the first set, but ultimately he did not stand a chance against the world’s top-ranked player, with the reigning Wimbledon champ winning 7-5, 6-3.
Djokovic had a little hiccup and lost his first set to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, but the Serbian rebounded and won his match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Murray also did not take the smoothest path to the quarterfinals and dropped the opening set to Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis before advancing by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The biggest upset in the men’s competition came when Japan’s Kei Nishikori bounced Spain’s David Ferrer—ranked fifth in the world—from the tournament. Kei, who entered the competition ranked No. 17, jumped on Ferrer and blanked him in the opening set before going on to win 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
In the women’s competition, top-ranked Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and both the Williams sisters were in action.
Azarenka, representing Belarus, dispatched Russian Nadia Petrova and won 7-6, 6-4.
Sharapova started slow while Germany’s Sabine Lisicki took the first set, but an upset was not in the cards. The Russian star cruised to a three-set victory by scores of 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Serena Williams dominated Russia’s Vera Zvonareva and posted a daunting score line of 6-1, 6-0.
Venus Williams took part in an exciting matchup with Germany’s No. 7-ranked Angelique Kerber. Both sets were closely contested, but Kerber won the crucial points and took the match 7-6, 7-6.
With nearly all the big names reaching the quarterfinals, the remaining matches should be thrilling affairs.
In the men’s competition, Federer will face American John Isner, while Djokovic matches up with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Murray takes on Nicolas Almagro. The fourth quarterfinal will feature Nishikori and Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro.
For the women’s matches, Azarenka will battle Kerber, Serena Williams will face Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, and Sharapova will compete with Belgium’s Kim Clijsters. The final match in the round will be between Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova and Russia’s Maria Kirilenko.
