Troy Dumais: US Diver Wins First Career Medal in Fourth Olympics

Tim DanielsAug 1, 2012

Troy Dumais made his first appearance in the Olympics 12 years ago in Sydney. The diver has been a part of Team USA ever since, representing the nation at each of the last four Games. But it wasn't until Wednesday that he won his first Olympic medal.

Dumais teamed up with Kristian Ipsen to claim bronze in the synchronized 3-meter springboard event. It's a competition the United States failed to medal in four years ago, making the podium appearance all the more impressive.

The duo finished more than 12 points ahead of fourth place thanks to a combination of smart dive choices and terrific execution. It probably took a lot longer than he expected during his journey to Australia over a decade ago, but Dumais will finally own an Olympic medal.

Above all else, it's a testament to his work ethic. Many athletes may have been compelled to move on after two or three failed chances. Not the 32-year-old California native. He kept working hard and earned another chance.

He didn't let this one slip away. Working with a partner who is just 19—and who probably would have a hard time remembering the Games in which Dumais made his Olympic debut—he finally accomplished his dream of standing on the podium.

Dumais has enjoyed a very successful career, with medal finishes at the World Championships and Pan American Games dating back to as early as 1998. Earning a spot on the Olympic team four straight times is an accomplishment in itself.

But it wasn't until Wednesday that he was able to enjoy the spotlight only the Games can provide. And he, along with Ipsen, did so in convincing fashion.

It's a result that should make Dumais feel like all the hard work and dedication he's put in was worth it.

Athletes don't get involved with diving for fame. They spend the vast majority of every four years as relative unknowns on the sports landscape. And then they only get a couple moments to shine.

In each of his first three attempts, Dumais wasn't able to get the job done. Immediately after those disappointments, the four years ahead must seem like an eternity, which is why it's not a surprise that Olympic athletes don't typically have long careers.

Dumais hung tough during those moments and was finally rewarded in London. And he still has one more chance to medal in the individual event. His resiliency should finally earn him the recognition he deserves after a long, successful career.

While that taste of fame will eventually fade away, Dumais now has something a lot more important: an Olympic medal.
