4. Men’s 200-meter Backstroke

Lochte will look to win his third gold medal of the 2012 Olympics in the 200 backstroke.

In the semifinals, he finished with the second-fastest time behind his own teammate Tyler Clary. At the 2011 World Championships, Lochte won gold while Clary finished almost two seconds slower and settled for bronze. We’ll see if Lochte was just saving his energy for the finals or if Clary deserves to be in the discussion as one of Team USA’s elite swimmers.

3. Women’s 100-meter Freestyle

Missy Franklin has already won a gold and bronze medal thus far. On Thursday, the 17-year-old will attempt to add to her total.

Franklin recorded the third fastest time in the semifinals on Wednesday behind Australia’s Melanie Schlanger and the Netherland’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo. Kromowidjojo set an Olympic record in the process so Franklin will have her hands full.

2. Women’s Individual All-Around

Team USA’s Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman will compete for gold with each other and Russian superstar Victoria Komova. While Komova dominated in the individual qualifiers, she was inconsistent in the team competition on Tuesday. We’ll see which Komova shows up and if Douglas and Raisman can each earn their way on to the podium.

1. Men’s 200-meter Individual Medley

The 400-meter individual medley was just a warm up for Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte, Round 2. And, you can bet your dog that this race will be closer than the first.

At the 2011 Worlds, Phelps lost to Lochte in the 200 IM by 0.16 seconds. At the U.S. Trials, Phelps got revenge edging Lochte by 0.09 seconds.

This isn’t just the must-watch event of the day—it’s arguably the must-watch event of the entire Olympics.
