Olympic Soccer Schedule 2012: Biggest Showdowns That Will Have Fans Buzzing

Nathan McCarterJun 3, 2018

The final day of group play is set to get under way with several crucial matches. Teams are fighting for one of the top two spots to advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament in their quest to medal.

Unlike the women's tournament, there are not two spots given to the best third place teams. Failing to place in the top two of your group will send the squad back to its home nation in disappointment.

Only Brazil and Japan have clinched their spots in the next round. All other spots are wide open. Some nations have a firm grasp on their ticket to the quarterfinals but have yet to make it official and still need a positive result.

With the stakes so high, there are plenty of matches to watch at the Games. Here is what you should keep an eye on.

Group A: Great Britain vs. Uruguay; 2:45 p.m. ET

Great Britain currently sits atop Group A, but a loss to Uruguay could make it miss the knockout stage altogether.

Senegal, sitting second, has a favorable matchup with the United Arab Emirates. It is most likely through to the next round. That means whoever comes out on top in this match will advance. That is a lot of pressure for the host nation.

Undoubtedly, it will mean a lot to Great Britain if it can top the group at the London Games. A draw is all Team GB needs to advance, but it is definitely looking for three points and the group victory.

With a massive crowd on hand, it will be interesting to see how the young players respond. It will not be easy, but they will get a much needed boost from the excited home crowd.

Group C: Egypt vs. Belarus; 9:30 a.m. ET

Belarus currently claims the second position in Group C behind Brazil, but a surging Egypt side wants to punch its ticket to the next round.

In its opening game against Brazil, Egypt got off to a rough start. It allowed three goals in the first half and looked outmatched. However, it answered the call in the second half. The Egyptians scored two goals but failed to get level. Despite the loss, it gave them momentum to carry forward through the rest of the group.

That makes them a dangerous out for Belarus. But all Belarus needs is a draw and it is through. The pressure to attack is firmly on Egypt.

Group D: Japan vs. Honduras; Noon ET

Honduras made the shock of the Olympics thus far with its 1-0 victory over Spain. Now it can top the group with a victory over an accurate and precise Japanese team.

Unless Japan wins and Morocco shocks the world with a two-goal victory over Spain, both Japan and Honduras will be advancing. This match is about positioning themselves for the knockout stages.

The loser will play Brazil. That is not what either wants.

With that danger looming, neither team will be able to sit back and cruise into the quarterfinals. The players will have to give it their all in an attempt to win and avoid Brazil. That will make the match exciting and important to their hopes of winning a medal.
