Georgia Football: Predicting the Depth Chart Heading into Fall Camp
Georgia had a solid 2011 season, winning 10 games and reaching the SEC Championship Game. It hopes to build on that success in 2012, as it returns 16 starters, including nine from a defensive unit that ranked fifth in the country a year ago.
The Bulldogs also have one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Aaron Murray, who will give this offense a chance in every game they play in. With the schedule this team has in 2012, anything short of another SEC East division title will be looked at as a failure of a season.
With fall camp set to begin soon for Georgia, here is what the depth chart should look like for the Bulldogs.
Quarterback
1 of 8Starter: Aaron Murray, Junior
Backup: Christian LeMay, Freshman
Despite playing behind a horrible offensive line last season, Murray still managed to throw over 3,100 yards and 35 touchdowns. It was his second straight season of at least 3,000 passing yards, and he should be considered one of the top quarterbacks in the country heading into the 2012 season.
Running Back
2 of 8Starter: Ken Malcome, Sophomore
Backup: Keith Marshall, Freshman
With Isaiah Crowell no longer on the team, Malcome will become the starter in the backfield. He carried the ball 42 times last season for 174 yards.
Marshall is a 5-star recruit from the 2012 class who should also see a lot more action than expected with the sudden lack of depth at the position.
Receivers
3 of 8Starter: Tavarres King, Senior
Backup: Justin Scott-Wesley, Freshman
King is the Bulldogs' leading receiver as he enters his fifth season. He has 94 career receptions for over 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is the go-to guy when it comes to throwing the football.
Starter: Marlon Brown, Senior
Backup: Michael Bennett, Sophomore
Brown was expected to become a star at Georgia, but failed to live up those expectations. However, during the spring, Brown looked really good, and a big season is expected from the senior wideout. He caught 15 passes for three touchdowns last year.
Starter: Arthur Lynch, Junior
Backup: Jay Rome, Freshman
It won't be easy trying to replace Orson Charles, but Lynch will try his best. He played in 14 games last season, but has not been much of a factor on offense throughout his career so far.
Offensive Line
4 of 8Left Tackle
Starter: Kenarious Gates, Junior
Backup: Austin Long, Junior
Gates is one of the bigger linemen you are going to find at 6'5", 330 pounds. He started eight games last season and will be responsible for Murray's blindside.
Left Guard
Starter: Dallas Lee, Junior
Backup: Mark Beard, Sophomore
Lee started seven games on the offensive line before having his season cut short with a broken leg. Expect to see him back in the starting rotation in 2012.
Center
Starter: David Andrews, Sophomore
Backup: Chris Burnette, Junior
Andrews is a smart lineman who is only entering his second season on the team. He played in 10 games last year and will be the starting center for the Bulldogs.
Right Guard
Starter: Chris Burnette, Junior
Backup: Hunter Long, Sophomore
Burnette started 12 games at the guard position, but missed a couple contests with an injured knee. He could end up playing the center position if need be, but for now, it appears he will hold down the right side of the line.
Right Tackle
Starter: Watts Dantzler, Sophomore
Backup: Kolton Houston, Sophomore
Houston will be the starting right tackle, but issues with his eligibility may keep him sidelined once again. Dantzler played in three games last season.
Defensive Line
5 of 8Starter: Cornelius Washington, Senior
Backup: Ray Drew, Sophomore
Washington has started a combined 14 games the last two seasons and finished last year with five sacks.
Starter: John Jenkins, Senior
Backup: Kwame Geathers, Junior
Jenkins started seven games for the Bulldogs last season after transferring from junior college. He picked up 28 tackles and three sacks and is considered the 76th-best player in the SEC by Bleacher Report.
Starter: Abry Jones, Senior
Backup: Garrison Smith, Junior
Jones started every game at the defensive end position for Georgia last year, sacking the quarterback four times and racking up 48 tackles.
Linebackers
6 of 8Starter: Jarvis Jones, Junior
Backup: T.J. Stripling, Junior
Jones quickly proved to be one of the best defensive players in the country, finishing the year with 70 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. He is nominated for several different awards this season and should walk away with a few if he has another season like that.
Starter: Michael Gilliard, Senior
Backup: Amarlo Herrera, Sophomore
Gilliard started 11 games last season and finished third on the team with 65 tackles.
Starter: Alec Ogletree, Junior
Backup: Christian Robinson, Senior
Ogeltree is one of the fastest linebackers in the country who started eight games last year and picked up 52 tackles.
Starter: Chase Vasser, Junior
Backup: Ramik Wilson, Sophomore
Much like every other linebacker on this roster, Vasser is an athletic player who is a solid tackler. He played in four games last season.
Defensive Backs
7 of 8Cornerback
Starter: Branden Smith, Senior
Backup: Damian Swann, Sophomore
Smith is a speedy corner who did a little bit of everything for this team last season. Despite playing a little bit of offense and special teams, he also had two interceptions and 24 tackles on defense.
Safety
Starter: Shawn Williams, Senior
Backup: Corey Moore, Sophomore
Williams started 13 games last season and led the Bulldogs in tackles with 72. He enters his senior season as one of the leaders of the club and is considered the 120th-best player in the SEC by Bleacher Report.
Safety
Starter: Bacarri Rambo, Senior
Backup: Connor Norman, Sophomore
Rambo is a ball-hawk at the safety position, intercepting a ridiculous eight passes last season. He is a first-team All-American and certainly a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball.
Cornerback
Starter: Sanders Commings, Junior
Backup: Malcolm Mitchell, Sophomore
Commings is an experienced player who has played every position in the defensive backfield for this Georgia team. He finished last year fourth on the team with 55 tackles and also broke up 11 passes.
Specialists
8 of 8Kicker
Starter: Marshall Morgan, Freshman
Backup: Jamie Lindley, Senior
Morgan is a true freshman who must be ready to take over the starting duties immediately. He will also have to beat out a bunch of walk-on kickers, as well as a senior.
Punter
Starter: Collin Barber, Freshman
Backup: Adam Erickson, Freshman
Like the kicking position, Georgia will likely rely on a freshman. Barber is the favorite to become the starting punter but will compete with walk-on kickers for the starting role.
