Must-See Showdowns
Men's Group Play: Great Britain vs. Uruguay on Wednesday, August 1 at 12:45 p.m. ET
The stadium will be rocking for this one as host team Great Britain needs to avoid a loss to ensure they advance to the elimination round.
They are currently tied with Senegal atop Group A in points. Uruguay is in third with three points, and UAE is in the cellar with zero points. This also means that Uruguay will be fighting for a chance to survive.
Great Britain are coming off of a 3-1 win over UAE, and they appear to be coming together as a team. Uruguay, on the other hand, struggled in a 2-0 loss to Senegal their last time on the pitch, and they didn't look all that impressive beating UAE 2-1 in their opener.
Great Britain should have the edge here, but when it comes down to one game, you never know.
Women's Quarterfinal: USA vs. New Zealand on Friday, August 3 at 9:30 a.m. ET
The U.S. women are rolling. They finished off a perfect group stage in which Abby Wambach scored a goal in each match.
They should not be challenged too heavily by New Zealand, who advanced despite having a 1-2 record.
Even if this match is not particularly close, it will still be entertaining to watch the dominant U.S. women playing at their best.
Women's Quarterfinal: Brazil vs. Japan on Friday, August 3 at 12 p.m. ET
This one should be an excellent match. Due to their 1-0 upset loss to Great Britain in the final match of group play, the strong Brazil squad gets the tough draw against reigning World Cup champs Japan.
Meanwhile, Japan hasn't been exactly blowing opponents away. They finished group play with a 1-0-2 record.
This is a matchup that wouldn't have shocked people if it occurred in the gold-medal match, but we have it here in the quarters, and it should be hard fought the whole way.
