Individual Women's Gymnastic Team Members: Each American's Best Chance at Gold

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

The United States women's gymnastics team won the gold medal, but now each member will compete for medals in the individual events.

Competition for the individual medals will be extremely fierce, and all of these athletes are capable of earning more medals for their country.

Each American gymnast will have plenty of momentum heading into the individual events after the thrill of winning gold. The schedule for all the events can be found at NBCOlympics.com.

Here is each athletes best chance at getting another gold medal.

Jordyn Wieber, Floor Excercise

1 of 5

In the most shocking turn of events in the qualification stage, Jordyn Wieber—the 2011 World Championships individual all-around gold medalist—failed to qualify for the finals.

Each country is only allowed two participants in the individual all-around. Wieber finished fourth overall in qualification, but Aly Raisman took second and Gabby Douglas ended up third, meaning Wieber will have to watch her teammates in that event.

Wieber did qualify for the floor exercise, but she is not favored to win this event as she finished sixth in qualifying.

Still, she is a remarkable competitor and will be putting all her effort and focus into this single event. Do not be surprised if she turns in a surprisingly impressive result.

Gabby Douglas, Individual All-Around

2 of 5

Gabby Douglas won the individual All-Around at the U.S. Olympic trials and she will try to do so again in London.

Douglas has always had an abundance of talent, but she has also been consistent throughout recent competitions. This has allowed her to live up to her potential and she will be one of the favorites to take the gold medal.

Her main competition will be Russian gymnast Victoria Komova as well as her U.S. teammate Aly Raisman, both of whom finished above her in the qualifier.

Douglas has a vibrant personality and will be looking to shine in the biggest event of her career. She may be one of the Olympics' biggest stars after the individual all-around is over.

Aly Raisman, Floor Excercise

3 of 5

Aly Raisman will certainly be in contention for gold in the individual all-around, but she looks set to win the floor exercise.

Raisman—the captain during the team competition—took bronze in the floor at the 2011 World Championships and won the qualification round in London.

She will battle Russia's Ksenia Afanasyeva, who won gold in the most recent World Championships, and Romania's Sandra Raluca Izbasa, the runner-up during qualifying.

This will certainly be a closely contested event, but Raisman has the talent to win it convincingly.

McKayla Maroney, Vault

4 of 5

McKayla Maroney offers the safest bet of any female gymnast to win an all-around event.

Even with her injury, Maroney is dominant in the vault. She won gold in the event at the 2011 World Championships and finished first in qualifying.

There is no gymnast on the competition who can hope to beat Maroney if she performs well.

It will be extremely surprising if she fails to take home a gold medal in this event.

Kyla Ross, Did Not Qualify

5 of 5

The youngest member of the team did not qualify for any of the individual events.

She performed admirably and her sixth-place finish on the balance beam would have earned her a spot in the finals had Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas not finished ahead of her.

She also earned a spot as a reserve for the uneven bars.

Ross' Olympics are seemingly over, but she has a gold medal at the age of 15, leaving little to complain about.
