London 2012 Medal Count: Nations That Will Dominate Day 5

Richard LangfordAug 1, 2012

After being tied in the medal count for the past few days (tied for first at 23 after Day 4), China will jump ahead of the United States following Day 5.

Both countries figure to have fantastic days, but the Americans will not be able to match China's haul.

Germany is also going to have a productive day and will jump up in the standings. They are currently eighth with six medals.

Here is a breakdown of where we can expect these countries to triumph on Day 5.

China

Day 5 Medal Prediction: 5 Gold, 3 Silver

If there is a medal to be handed out in diving, it is a safe bet to ink China in for a gold. On Day 5 it will be men's synchronized three-meter springboard partners Luo Yutong and Win Kai who will bring home the gold.

They aren't the only Day 5 gold medalist China will boast either. Chen Ying in the women's 25-meter pistol, Ding Ning in table tennis, Lu Xiaojun in men's 77  kilogram weightlifting and reigning world 200-meter butterfly champion Jiao Liuyang will all take home gold.

China also has another couple of gold medal hopefuls on tap for Wednesday with Li Xiaoxia in table tennis and its 4x200 women's freestyle relay team, but they will both wind up with a silver.

USA

Day 5 Medal Prediction: 2 Gold, 2 Bronze, 2 Silver

The Americans won't lose much ground to China in the medal count as they will bring home six on Wednesday.

The reason that China won't take gold in the 4x200 freestyle is that the American women, with Allison Schmitt and Missy Franklin, will be too much to handle. The U.S. can also count on a gold from two-time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis in the women's sabre individual fencing event.

In one of the day's highlights, Danell Leyva will rebound from his poor team showing to take home a silver in the individual all-around gymnastics competition, and defending Olympics champ Kristin Armstrong will claim a silver in the women's individual cycling time trial.

The Americans will also pluck two bronze medals from the water as their women's quadruple sculls team will come up big, and Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen are poised to pull some hardware in the synchronized three-meter springboard competition.

Germany

Day 5 Medal Prediction: 3 Golds, 1 Bronze

Germany is going to more than double its gold medal count on Wednesday, and that will be thanks in large part to its strong rowing team.

In women's quadruple sculls and the men's eight, Germany is looking too strong to be beaten, and they won't be.

They also are in great shape in the women's individual cycling time trial as Judith Arndt, who has been close to Olympic gold, is looking stronger than ever.

Hannes Aigner is also a serious threat in the men's single kayak, but with this deep field, he will take the bronze.
