Olympic Medal Count 2012: Bold Medal Predictions for Day 5

Richard LangfordAug 1, 2012

The United States men's gymnastics team will find a bit of redemption on Wednesday, and China and the U.S. will continue to wrack up medals.

At the end of Tuesday, the two were tied atop the medal standings with 23 medals apiece. Japan was in third, a whopping 10 medals behind.

There are plenty more medals to be had on Wednesday. Here are predictions for three of those events.

Men's Gymnastics: Individual All-Around

Danell Leyva, like the rest of his U.S. teammates, was a disappointment in the team competition. He struggled on the pommel horse and wobbled on the parallel bars.

Still, this is the man who finished qualifying with the highest all-around total, and the man who has been one of the sport's most consistent competitors over the past couple of years. He will rebound, but not all the way to gold.

That will go to Japan's Kohei Uchimura. He is the reigning world champion and the only male gymnast to be world champion three times.

He also has to be feeling pretty good after his low score on the pommel horse was revised and did not bounce his team from second to fourth. With that burden off his shoulders, he will attack this competition with confidence.

Prediction

Gold: Kohei Uchimura, Japan

Silver: Danell Leyva, USA

Bronze: David Belyavskiy, Russia

Women's Cycling: Individual Time Trial

USA's Kristin Armstrong is the defending Olympic gold medalist in this event, and certainly many like her to win a medal this time around, but probably not gold.

This is a deep field and she is now 38 and coming off of a retirement after having a child. Still, this champion will be right in the mix. Competing for the gold with her will be reigning world champ Judith Arndt of Germany, Emma Pooley of Great Britain, who won the silver last Olympics, and New Zealand's Linda Villumsen, who was second in the world championship.

This is going to be a close and hard-fought race.

Prediction

Gold: Judith Arndt, Germany

Silver: Kristin Armstrong, USA

Bronze: Linda Villumsen, New Zealand

Women's Swimming: 4x200 relay

This should be a fun relay, but in the end, no one has the speed to keep up with an American squad led by Allison Schmitt and Missy Franklin, who finished first and fourth, respectively, in the 200-meter freestyle finals.

Australia, China and France all will figure into the medal race here, but they will do so only for the silver and bronze. Here is how it will shake out.

Prediction

Gold: USA

Silver: France

Bronze: China
