Olympics 2012 TV Schedule: Top Events to Watch on Day 5
Ever since Ryan Lochte destroyed Michael Phelps in the 400-meter IM when the Olympics began, we've been eagerly awaiting a rematch.
On Day 5, we'll get our first glimpse of one.
Wednesday's Olympic schedule features the preliminary heats for the men's 200-meter IM. If (or more like when) Phelps and Lochte perform well in the heats, they'll move on to the semifinals later that day.
And if they finish in the top eight in the semis, we'll get to see them face off with yet another medal on the line. The finals won't happen until Day 6, but the Day 5 action will set it all up. Will Lochte upstage his nemesis once again? Will Phelps finally achieve redemption? Soon, we'll find out.
Here's a closer look at the 200 IM and some of the other Day 5 events you can't miss. You can see Wednesday's full TV schedule here.
Men's 200-Meter IM
Qualification: 6:06 a.m. ET
Semifinals: 3:41 p.m. ET
TV*: NBC, 11:05-11:30 a.m. (tape delay) and 8 p.m.-12 a.m. ET (tape delay)
*Both events will be live streamed on NBCOlympics.com
This will likely be our last chance to see two of the greatest swimmers of this generation—Phelps and Lochte—face off against one another. The 200 IM is the only remaining event in which they both are scheduled to swim. Barring a total meltdown (sort of like the one Phelps almost experienced during the 400 IM qualifier), they will be in position to vie for the gold when all is said and done on Wednesday.
During the Olympic Trials, Phelps got the best of Lochte in this event, registering the fastest 200 IM time this year at 1:54.84. Lochte finished nine-hundreths of a second behind him, according to USA Today, but he also owns the world-record time of 1:54.00.
This one is bound to be an instant classic—even before a medal is up for grabs.
Women's Basketball: USA vs. Turkey
When: 5 p.m. ET
TV: NBC Sports Network
Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com
The U.S. women's Olympic basketball team hasn't dropped a single one of its last 35 matchups, and thus far in London, it's 2-0. But Geno Auriemma's squad will be taking on another undefeated team in first-time Olympian Turkey.
Still, undefeated opponent or not, this matchup is 100 percent in the Americans' favor. They're coming off a 52-point shellacking of Angola on Monday, whereas Turkey enters the matchup on the heels of a slim, four-point win over the Czech Republic.
No team has yet to challenge the U.S. in the slightest, and the four-time reigning gold medalists will look to make Turkey their third straight win of this Olympics. One player to keep an eye on: Candace Parker, who has registered a double-double in each of her first two games.
Men's Gymnastics All-Around Final
When: 11:30 a.m. ET
TV: NBC, 8 p.m.-12 a.m. ET (tape delay)
Live Stream: NBCOlympics.com
The men's gymnastics team will have a much-anticipated shot at redemption in the individual all-around final on Wednesday. After Monday's debacle—when the U.S. shockingly finished fifth in the team final—the Americans badly need to medal in this event.
On Monday, John Orozco shouldered much of the blame for the U.S.'s downfall after making uncharacteristic mistakes in his two events—the vault and the pommel horse. Now, it will be up to him and teammate Danell Leyva to bring home the hardware.
Leyva finished first all-around at this year's trials, while Orozco finished second. In the all-around qualification, Leyva finished first and Orozco finished fourth, but not by much.
This is their chance to show China, Japan and Great Britain what they're truly capable of.
