Olympic Soccer TV Schedule: When and Where to Watch Final Day of Group Stage

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

As teams enter the final round of the group stage, there is still plenty to be decided in the 2012 Olympic soccer tournament.

Only two countries—including Spain, in one of the biggest upsets of the Games so far—have been officially eliminated from contention. Otherwise, nearly every country that entered the event still has a chance to reach the knockout stage.

This should make for plenty of exciting moments on Wednesday as the favorites look to secure a berth in the quarterfinals, and underdogs seek to steal the spotlight.

Players to Watch

Ryan Giggs (Great Britain)

The veteran midfielder was one of the three overage players that Great Britain elected to add to the squad. The longtime Manchester United star has relished the opportunity. Giggs scored the opening goal in the team's victory over the United Arab Emirates.

His most important duty on Wednesday will be as a leader, though. A lot of the players on the pitch alongside him against Uruguay will be playing the biggest match of their lives as the host nation looks to advance to the quarterfinals.

Giggs has been through a lot of high-pressure matches during his career and must ensure his teammates remain focused and do not let the situation get the better of them. He knows that getting eliminated early would be a major disappointment.

Neymar (Brazil)

Neymar has been one of the Olympics' biggest breakout stars so far. Even though soccer fans already knew about the young Brazilian, it's been the first chance for many fans to get a look at him on the international stage. He's been in top form.

The 20-year-old striker has scored a goal in each of the team's first two games and was the most dangerous player on the pitch on both occasions. He's showcased amazing moves, leaving fans and opponents astonished.

It's key for him to show he can play at that high level every night. Like most young players, he has battled some inconsistency early in his career, but there hasn't been any sign of that early in London. He's a superstar in the making.

Jerry Bengtson (Honduras)

The Honduras squad as a whole was an afterthought coming into the Olympics. A victory over Spain should finally earn the team some respect heading into the final group stage match. One point is needed to reach the next round.

Bengtson has led the way, scoring all three goals for Honduras to this point. The unheralded 25-year-old forward, who plays for the New England Revolution in MLS, found the net in the seventh minute against La Roja to jump-start the upset.

The chances of advancing are high for Honduras, since Spain plays Morocco, the only team that can catch the Hondurans. It would be a gigantic accomplishment for the country and Bengtson would become a hero back home.
