Olympics 2012 Schedule: Full Listing of Events You Can't Miss

Jeremy FuchsJun 1, 2018

The 2012 Summer Olympics are well underway and have already provided many lasting, exciting moments.

There is a dizzying array of coverage on television and online—some 5,500 hours. It can be hard to keep up.

But at every Olympics, there are events you simply cannot miss, and this year has plenty.

What are some of the can't-miss events in London? Read on to find out.

Gymnastics: Women's Team Final

1 of 6

The U.S. women are looking to win the gold medal in the team event for the first time since 1996 and will have to overcome a strong Chinese team that won gold in 2008..

Still, this American team has the best chance for gold since that '96 triumph.

This year's team features such stars as Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber.

The team final takes place July 31. The matchup between the Chinese and the Americans is too exciting to miss.

Swimming: Men's 200-Meter Individual Medley

2 of 6

Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte go at it again on August 2nd in the 200-meter individual medley.

Phelps is looking for redemption after finishing fourth in the 400-meter IM, while Lochte is looking to rebound after disappointing finishes in the 4x100 freestyle relay and 200-meter freestyle.

Lochte and Phelps came into this Games as huge rivals, and this is another showdown.

Phelps has swam the fastest time in this event in the world this year at the U.S. Trials, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 54.84 seconds.

Lochte is the world-record holder at 1:54:00 and the defending world champion, where he beat Phelps.

But don't forget Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, who won silver in this event in Beijing and has the third fastest time this year.

When the gun goes off for this event, look for an exciting race that comes right down to the wire.

Track: Men's 100-Meter Dash

3 of 6

Who will be crowned as the fastest man in the world? The 100-meter dash on August 5 will decide that.

Usain Bolt, the world-record holder, was beaten at the Jamaican trials by Yohan Blake, who also beat him in the 200-meter dash.

There's also American Tyson Gay, who wants to rebound from a disappointing 2008 performance where he didn't make the finals.

Justin Gatlin, who was banned for four years for testing positive for a banned substance, is back and won the U.S. trials with a time of 9.80 seconds. He also won the gold in this event in 2004.

There are four legitimate stars in this event, and all could potentially win. Make sure your TV is set to see which one becomes the world's fastest man alive.

Track: Women's 100-Meter Hurdles

4 of 6

Lolo Jones is looking for redemption.

The 2008 favorite was in the lead when she tripped on the second-to-last hurdle. She lost her balance and ended up finishing seventh.

Fellow American Dawn Harper ended up winning.

Jones is one of the most famous Olympians, while Harper rides under the radar.

The rematch will be exciting to watch. Will Jones finally break though and win gold, or will Harper quietly repeat?

The action takes place August 7.

Soccer: Women's Final

5 of 6

The USA women's soccer team is looking to avenge their World Cup loss.

They captivated America with their exciting run to the finals but lost in dramatic fashion to Japan.

They're looking to win gold for the third time in a row, and it won't be an easy road, as they'll face tough opponents in Brazil, Canada, Sweden and Japan.

But if Hope Solo and Co. can get through and win it all, they'll be heroes back home.

The gold-medal game is on August 9 at 2:45 EST.

Basketball: Men's Final

6 of 6

The Dream Team? Not quite. But the 2012 USA men's basketball team is still really, really good.

Led by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, the Americans are super athletic and play dogged defense. They are impossible to stop in transition and will feature many high-flying dunks.

After the disappointing bronze in Athens,  the U.S. won gold in 2008 and established themselves at the top of the basketball world.

While the Americans have the most talent, there are still going to be tough games. Spain, who narrowly lost to the U.S. in the 2008 gold-medal game, is very formidable and features NBA stars Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka.

Argentina, who won gold in 2004, is an experienced team who could give the U.S. fits.

The Americans have a target on their backs and every team is looking to knock them off. While this year's version has the talent to win, they are not invincible like the 1992 team.

Still, look for the U.S. to defend their gold in the final on August 12 at 10 a.m. EST.
