Olympic Swimming Schedule 2012: Complete Listing for Top Events
The London 2012 Olympics definitely aren’t going as scheduled in the pool.
Team USA was supposed to dominate any and all swimming competition with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Through three days, though, they’ve been an utter disappointment.
On Saturday, Lochte ended Phelps’ Olympic winning streak in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Lochte won gold, but that half of the result shocked no one. What did was Phelps failing to medal entirely, finishing fourth.
At first, the race seemed to symbolize the passing of a torch for Team USA. Phelps imposed his will on Beijing. In London, it would be Lochte’s turn.
And then Sunday happened.
With Lochte and Phelps on the same 4x100 team, the U.S. should’ve blown their competition out of the water. Phelps swam extremely well and helped build a lead for Lochte as the squad’s anchor. Instead of furthering his Olympic legacy, though, he choked.
France won gold and the Americans were forced to settle for silver.
But Lochte’s poor performance had to be a fluke, right?
Unfortunately, the only thing looking like a fluke is his gold medal.
On Monday, he suffered another letdown. In the 200-meter freestyle, he failed to medal, as he finished fourth.
Four years ago, Phelps spoiled the U.S. by winning eight gold medals. Americans expected the same in these games, just with dominance divided between Phelps and Lochte. Apparently, fans didn’t pay attention to that Morgan Freeman commercial.
Anything can happen in the pool. A swimmer’s margin of error is so small.
In Beijing, everything went right for Phelps and Team USA. The U.S. is feeling much less lucky in London. Luckily for the Olympic favorites, though, there are plenty of remaining events to make up for a few botched races.
