Knicks Rumors: Sonny Weems Would Be Perfect Player to Complement Carmelo Anthony
The last thing the New York Knicks need on their roster is a volume shooter, which is why Sonny Weems would be a perfect fit as a complementary player to Carmelo Anthony.
According to ESPNNewYork.com's Jared Zwerling, Weems' agent Roger Montgomery says the team is interested in adding Weems or Maurice Evans:
"I think both of them would fit really good in that situation...Sonny would be an absolute steal if he was able to go play with them, just because of how athletic he is. I think that he could be a starter and he could be a rotation guy. I think he would be ideal.
"
It's important to note that, as of yet, we haven't heard anything from the Knicks about this. That said, they are in desperate need of a shooting guard, and their options are extremely limited at this point—Zwerling reported that the Knicks only have the veteran's minimum of approximately $1.4 million left to use this year.
With Landry Fields gone to the Toronto Raptors and Iman Shumpert out for the foreseeable future, J.R. Smith is the only shooting guard available right now. He's better suited to come off the bench for the Knicks next season when Anthony needs a breather, as he is a guy who can provide instant offense.
Weems would be the perfect player to come in and compete for the starting shooting guard role. He's never been accused of being a volume shooter, or even a good shooter, but that's not what the Knicks need.
What Weems does bring to the table is speed, quickness and the ability to play off the ball. He's a slashing guard who can get easy buckets when teams start to focus too much on Anthony and Tyson Chandler.
The best part about Weems is that he's 26 years old and his game has been improving every single year he's been in the NBA. The Knicks haven't made many good personnel moves so far this summer, but they would be wise to pick up Weems before he's no longer available.
