The 3 Most Positive Developments of the Dallas Cowboys Offseason

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the most active NFL teams during the offseason, and with that comes positive results for owner Jerry Jones' squad. Here are the three most positive developments of the Cowboys' offseason.

Rob Ryan Gets a Full Training Camp with Defense

Dallas brought defensive coordinator Rob Ryan over from Cleveland last year, but due to the NFL lockout, Ryan was unable to work with his new players for much of the offseason. With the collective bargaining agreement dealt with, Ryan now gets to spend a whole training camp re-tooling his unit.

There are more than a few new faces for the Cowboys coordinator to get to know, but Jones has spent his well-earned money to allow Ryan to fix one of the team's weakest links last season. Ryan admitted to NFL.com's Marc Sessler that not every player was on the same page in his new scheme, saying:

"

The parts where I take the blame for was when there's confusion on the defense, and a lot of that was us not getting on the same page, even in training camp.

"

Now with new players to improve several positions and a full training camp with his unit, Ryan should be able to create a respectable defense for Dallas.

Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne

Speaking of the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys' talent level jumped a full letter grade after signing Carr in free agency and selecting Claiborne in the draft.

It didn't take too much game film for head coach Jason Garrett and company to figure out their team was torched in the secondary.

Best way to fix that problem? Go out and sign the best cornerback on the free-agent market and trade up in the draft to get the best corner coming out of college.

Both players are new to Big D and will need to learn Ryan's defense in and out before September rolls around, but just having them on the roster means the Cowboys have one less weakness for opposing teams to exploit.

Jerry Jones' "Window Closing" Remarks

Some of the Dallas faithful may have read Jerry Jones' comments to NFL Network about his "window getting shorter" and big-name players like Tony Romo, Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware currently in their prime as a stunt to get the Cowboys back on the front page.

While the Cowboys' owner does have a reputation for doing that sort of thing (especially when NFL news is slow), he couldn't have been more right, and those comments should light a fire in his team.

Dallas has a difficult schedule ahead of it this year with matchups against all of the NFC South and AFC North, but Jones' comments should ring in the players' ears all season long.

It's no secret that the 'Boys are always expected to make a deep playoff run whether the year is 1992 or 2012. With the team owner expressing what everyone else is thinking, that should add some extra motivation to make the playoffs as they try to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl.

The comments made by Jones back in May will serve as a constant reminder that finishing just short of the playoffs or a first-round postseason exit cannot be tolerated anymore. The time is now.
