Boston Celtics Rumors: Signing Darko Milicic or Michael Redd Makes No Sense
After the loss of Ray Allen to the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics are trying to recover by making a few free-agent signings. But Celtics fans must brace themselves—these are not exciting moves.
The team is reportedly interested in former second overall pick Darko Milicic. ESPN's Ric Bucher reported on the subject of his amnesty clause with the Minnesota Timberwolves:
"Milicic has two years and $10 million remaining on his contract, but only $7 million is guaranteed. Once finalized, Milicic will go through a modified amnesty process. Teams with cap space will be able to make blind bids to pick up a portion of his remaining salary. If no team makes a bid, Milicic will become an unrestricted free agent.
"
The biggest problem with Milicic is that he's not very good. He can't shoot or rebound well, which is why he's one of the biggest draft busts in history. He has a career average of just 6.0 points per game and 4.2 rebounds.
This is a move that would make little sense for Boston. He would see little time off the bench and would be used primarily as a shot-blocker. He can't help the team in any other way.
There has also been a thought that the Celtics should ultimately pursue free-agent shooting guard Michael Redd. This is another move that would make little sense for Boston.
The team recently replaced Ray Allen with Jason "The Jet" Terry. Rather than Redd, Jet is a much better option at this point in his career.
The thought that Redd could produce some kind of impact off the bench is interesting, but not very likely. Redd isn't the same player he once was. He tore both his ACL and MCL in 2009 and 2010. Prior to these devastating injuries, though, he was the best shooter on earth.
The fact of the matter is that Redd really wouldn't improve the Celtics at all. He averaged just 8.2 points per game off the bench for the Phoenix Suns last season.
The ultimate question is, would Redd help the Celtics get over the hump and defeat the Miami Heat? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no.
