NBA Free Agency: Ranking Best Available Names on the Market
After only a couple of weeks, most of the top free agents have already been snatched up in the NBA, but there remains a few gems who could help teams this season.
A group of solid, young developmental players headline the remaining crop. Most of them have yet to reach their full potential, but could blossom into stars in the right situation.
For teams looking for steady veterans, the market has thinned out quickly, but a few options remain.
All in all, enough talent is up for grabs to make the remaining group of free agents attractive. Teams looking for a last minute upgrade will do well to add one of the few remaining solid players.
Here are the top six available free agents.
6—Leandro Barbosa
1 of 6Leandro Barbosa is a pure shooter, capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor.
While Barbosa is among the best shooters in the NBA, he brings little else to the table. His lack of versatility keeps him from being a regular starter.
Still, Barbosa is very good at what he does, and some team will value his shooting ability enough to add him as a scorer off the bench.
A team that could be a good fit for Barbosa is the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are likely to let their former sharp-shooter Jodie Meeks sign elsewhere, so they will be on the lookout for a pure shooter.
Barbosa could be that shooter, complementing their current scoring options well.
5—Kris Humphries
2 of 6Finding a mention of Kris Humphries without a Kim Kardashian reference is hard, but he's earned the right to be a standalone man after an excellent season this past year.
While his critics claim that he racked up his excellent stats as a result of being on a bad team, his efficiency was tremendous, and he would probably do even better with a better supporting cast.
Humphries is an excellent rebounder and a solid scorer. He knows what he does well and he plays within himself on offense. He especially excels as a rebounder on offense.
Defensively, Humphries is a good shot blocker and post presence, who's strength is a major benefit.
The best fit for Humphries would be to remain with the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets have taken themselves out of the Dwight Howard sweepstakes, and the Nets could use his defense and rebounding to complement the offense of Brook Lopez.
4—Antawn Jamison
3 of 6The oldest player on this list, Antawn Jamison, could end up being the most productive next year as well. Despite his advanced age, Jamison is still a good scorer and rebounder.
Jamison was hurt last year by a lack of offensive options in Cleveland, and his field goal percentage took a nose-dive as a result.
Throughout his career, though, Jamison has been a fairly efficient scorer capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor.
Unfortunately, Jamison can only be expected to regress as his career winds down. At 36 years old, Jamison can no longer be relied on as a major scoring option, but he could excel in an offense that already features proven scorers.
With some space to operate, Jamison could surprise next season.
The Los Angeles Lakers would be a logical match for Jamison. Jamison could provide a solid scoring threat off the bench to help rest Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.
The Lakers are clearly all-in to win now, so Jamison would be a nice addition towards that end.
3—Randy Foye
4 of 6Randy Foye is another sharp-shooter who does his best work from behind the 3-point line.
While he'll never be an incredibly efficient scorer, Foye can provide an excellent option off the bench who can shoot and avoid major mistakes.
Last year, Foye shot 38.7 percent from behind the line, an incredible number considering that more than half of his shots were from deep.
Foye doesn't bring much to the table in terms of rebounding or passing. He's a shooting guard in a point guard's body, which hurts his ability to defend some shooting guards.
Any team looking for a shooter should look into Randy Foye. In the right situation, he could be a top-tier pickup with his contributions on offense.
The Atlanta Hawks would make sense as an option for Foye. They just lost one of their top offensive threats in Joe Johnson, and Foye could be a more than adequate replacement.
2—JaVale McGee
5 of 6JaVale McGee may be a lunkhead, but he is a supremely talented player with the ability to be a true franchise center.
Just to get this out of the way, McGee makes a multitude of stupid plays on the court. Any quick YouTube search will reveal a host of McGee blooper reels, most of which are hysterical.
Despite his reputation, though, McGee is a monster who can dominate when he's focused.
As a shot blocker and a rebounder, McGee has already proven that he is in the upper echelon of NBA players.
Where McGee needs to improve is his court awareness.
This is something that improved rapidly in his short stint with the Denver Nuggets. Playing on a functional team really helped McGee develop, and he is now ready for an improved role.
The Nuggets are very interested in retaining McGee, but he wants to weigh his options before committing to a long-term deal.
Ultimately, though, the Nuggets make the most sense for McGee. He could be a part of a functioning team that will help him along in his development in Denver, which could help him blossom into one of the league's top centers.
1—O.J. Mayo
6 of 6Although O.J. Mayo has regressed the past two seasons, he remains an excellent scorer with star potential.
After he lit up his first two years in the league, averaging well over 15 points per game and a 3-point percentage above 38%, Mayo looked to be one of the bright young stars in the league.
Unfortunately, the past two seasons, his shooting percentage and scoring have decreased, and the Memphis Grizzlies were no longer interested in retaining his services.
Though the Grizzlies may no longer be interested, Mayo is the top free agent available, and he will bring a scoring punch to any team that picks him up.
Any team looking for a scorer and a sharp-shooter needs to pick up the talented 24 year old. Mayo has never shot worse than 35% from three-point range in a season, and he has the talent to be a go-to scorer.
Unfortunately, Mayo has not developed as a rebounder or a passer, which limits his impact from time to time.
Given the right situation, though, Mayo could shine. He does his best work when given enough minutes to get hot, so he'll need to be in a starting situation to shine.
A team like the Celtics would be a nice fit for Mayo. The Celtics need to get younger throughout their roster, and Mayo would give them an excellent, young scorer who would complement Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo well.
