Is Kevin Love Insane to Think Stars Would Join Him in Minnesota?

Stephen BabbJun 2, 2018

Kevin Love is not a happy camper.

The 23-year-old sounds as if he'd spent the last decade fighting a war knew he could never win.

At least that's the vibe one takes away from the comments reported by Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears:

"

"My patience is not high," Love said. "Would yours be, especially when I'm a big proponent of greatness surrounding itself with greatness? All these [Team USA] guys seem to have great players around them."

"

First of all, who isn't a proponent of greatness surrounding itself with greatness? Is this some kind of ideology Love is coining?

In any event, the one thing about this comically self-entitled interview that should go without question is that this guy is starting to feel like the new kid on the block around all these Olympic superstars.

His priorities are clear, at any rate—he wants to make the playoffs, especially with all the older kids bragging about it so much (again via Stein):

"

"It's tough seeing all these guys that are young and older who have all played in the playoffs. When they start talking about that, I have nothing to talk about. If I don’t make the playoffs next year I don’t know what will happen."

"

Doesn't he, though? He'll have to try again next year, with more or less the same team as before. Then, when it becomes clear that he'll have to put this team on his back without the aid of fellow Olympians, he'll find some way to join Andrew Bynum in Los Angeles down the road.

That's how the game works for oft-indulged stars, these days.

It's not about their teams winning.

It's about them winning.

Love won't get the help he wants, because nobody with a say over the matter wants to play in Minnesota. That probably isn't fair, given the roster's upside and the city's understated appeal, but it's a reality.

Chances are the Timberwolves will surround Love with more talent than Kevin Garnett was ever afforded, but that doesn't mean the results will be any different.

There will always be a better team in the West. Minnesota will see some first rounds, and maybe a couple of Conference Semifinals—but anything beyond that is a bit optimistic.

If you're a big name in today's league, there are plenty of attractive destinations. Love's talent alone isn't an adequate draw, especially when the guy remains something of a liability on the defensive end.

Brandon Roy will find a perfect opportunity in Minnesota, and maybe he'll be enough to take this club to the next level.

Love shouldn't expect much more help than that, though he almost certainly will.

With a win-now attitude on a roster set to hit its prime in another five years, Love may not wait around long enough.
