NBA Rumors: Why Steve Nash Should Go to the Mavericks
Since the end of the NBA playoffs, rumors of where available players will land has run amok with new destinations seemingly every day.
Thus far, Steve Nash and his sign-and-trade rumors have been no exception.
However, Nash’s options have been limited due to recent developments over the past couple of days. Even though I personally want to see Nash play for Toronto, I just don’t think it’s meant to be.
While the Raptors agreed to sign former Knicks guard Landry Fields, Nash is a winner and wants a chance to win a title—something that’ll be difficult to do in Canada (SI.com).
Also, Brooklyn is no longer a potential landing spot for the Santa Clara-product as the Nets received good news from Deron Williams yesterday.
So, where will the two-time MVP land?
While the Lakers and Knicks are reportedly conjuring up some sign-and-trade scenarios that would please the Suns, my gut and logic tells me that Nash is going to the Dallas Mavericks.
While TNT’s David Aldridge reports that the Mavs also have interest in Aaron Brooks and Randy Foye, if Mark Cuban gets the chance to bring back Nash, he’ll do it in a heartbeat.
Nash played in Dallas from 1998-2004, where he averaged 13.7 points per game and made the playoffs four times.
The eight-time All-Star would provide the Mavs with a perfect replacement at point guard assuming Jason Kidd leaves.
Not only is Nash a born leader, but also he’s a fantastic point guard with a couple good years left in him, even at age 38.
After winning the NBA Finals in the 2010-11 season, the Mavs were disappointed this year after being swept by eventual Western Conference winners Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.
However, the team still has an exceptional veteran nucleus orbiting around Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion (who Nash played with in Phoenix) and Vince Carter.
The fact that the Mavs have proven that they can win an NBA title may be the deal breaker for Nash.
While Toronto and New York are nice options and have their upsides, Dallas provides Nash the best opportunity to play with a cohesive, experienced team and make an NBA Finals run with a team and city he’s already familiar with.
