Lakers Rumors: Los Angeles Has No Shot of Landing Steve Nash
The Los Angeles Lakers have entered the Steve Nash sweepstakes, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com.
But before you get too excited, Lakers fans, let's look at the realities of the situation.
Thanks to the massive salary of their current roster, the Lakers can only offer Nash the mini-mid-level exception of $3 million next season. That means they would likely have to pull off a sign-and-trade to reel him in while giving him the salary he desires.
While that sounds fine in theory, there's no way the Suns would agree to such a deal.
First of all, they hate the Lakers.
The Suns have been bounced from the playoffs too many times by Kobe and the gang to just hand them the best player in franchise history. Although it's sort of a one-way street these days, this is still a divisional rivalry, and Phoenix will do anything they can not to help the Lakers.
Even if there wasn't an ocean full of bad blood between the two, who could the Lakers offer that would intrigue the Suns? Ramon Sessions? Eh, he's ok. Josh McRoberts? Not the most enticing player. Metta World Peace? Yeah, no thanks.
This is an unfortunate situation for the Lakers and their fans, as Steve Nash is exactly the player they need. Forget Dwight Howard, Nash would be a saving grace out in Lakerland. He's one of the best passers in NBA history, an assassin from beyond the arc and a fierce competitor.
Unfortunately, you Laker fans will just have to kiss this pipe dream goodbye, because there's no way Nash dons the purple and gold next season.
