NBA Free Agency Rumors: Deron Williams Must Choose Mavericks over Nets
For Deron Williams, it's now between the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets. While joining each side has its benefits, the Mavericks can offer Williams something the Nets can't—the chance to win a championship next year.
To me, that would make all the difference in the world. Perhaps that is why he'll visit Dallas first. From Sports Illustrated:
"Williams will meet with the Mavericks Monday morning before heading back to the East Coast to meet with the Brooklyn Nets later in the evening, ESPN’s Marc Stein reported Sunday.
Last Sunday, Williams narrowed down his choices to remaining with the Nets or signing with the Mavericks. The Nets can offer Williams more money—five years and about $100 million, compared with the Mavericks’ four years and $75 million. But the Mavericks can offer Williams a chance to play for his hometown team and a better chance to play for a championship alongside Dirk Nowitzki.
"
And hey, if the difference in money is that important to Williams, I'm sure Mark Cuban can help him increase his endorsements or business holdings. Apparently, that Cuban guy is a pretty good businessman.
I understand the appeal of playing in Brooklyn. I certainly understand the appeal of another year of guaranteed money and $25 million of additional earnings. And given the Nets' rumored pursuit of Joe Johnson, I even get why Williams might be willing to stick around with the Nets and help them build for the future.
But c'mon—would you rather play with Johnson or Nowitzki? Would you rather take your chances with the Nets or join the Mavericks, who won the 2011 NBA championship and have made the playoffs in 12 consecutive seasons?
And how cool would it be to play for your hometown squad? Personally, I think that would be awesome. If I was a foot taller and had a jump shot, it would be my dream to play for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Williams finds himself in a win-win situation with this decision. But if he chooses the Mavericks, he'll win more, he'll win more quickly and he'll be far more likely to win a championship.
I guess that makes it more of a WIN-win situation, huh?
Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets want Dwight Howard to just get traded already, too.
