Toronto Blue Jays: A Quick Preview

Kale SherarFeb 14, 2009

We all know that the Jays did nothing this offseason, as they only signed a few players to minor league contracts, most notably Kevin Millar. I will give you a quick review and predictions for this 2009 season.

I feel that their pitching staff will go: Halladay, Litsch, Purcey, Janssen, Richmond.  In late May though, Mcgowan will return to the number two slot, bumping Scott Richmond out.  Both Halladay and Litsch had excellent years in 2008, and I hope they can continue this year.  Janssen is a toss-up, just having returned from major surgery, same as Mcgowan.  I feel Purcey will struggle, but will gain composure in July.

Their bullpen is once again solid, and will have Ryan closing, League and Downs as set-up men, and Camp, Accardo, Tallet, and Carlson as solid middle-relief guys.  Last year, Ryan blew four saves out of 36, and posted a decent 2.95 era, here's hoping he improves.  League posted a 2.18 era in a solid year, and I feel he has regained his role as their primary right handed setup man. Downs was by far their best guy with a 1.78 era, and I have a strong feeling it will be even lower this year.

As for middle relief: Jeremy Accardo struggled last year and became sidelined with a forearm problem, here's hoping he returns to his 2007 numbers. Brian Tallet had a decent year going 1-2 with a 2.88 era.  It would be nice though if his era dropped a bit.  Shawn Camp was forgettable going 3-1, but with a 4.12 era. Needs improvement.

Lastly, Jesse Carlson had a great rookie year going 7-2 with a 2.25 era. The Jays have a great future star in this kid. The rest of the 'pen looks average at best with Jason Frasor being the only other notable name, although he is known to struggle with his command.

Their position players will be Barajas and Maroth catching, Overbay at first, Hill at second, Scutaro/Mcdonald at short, Rolen at third, Rios in right, Wells in center, and Lind in left.  Millar will be the DH as I feel Snider will not make the big league club.

The only thing the Jays need to improve upon is their power and consistency.  Combine that with a relatively injury-free season, and they can actually make a splash in the AL East. Watch for more power as Cito Gaston has promised to work harder with the hitters, and watch for an even better season from Doc as he only seems to get better with age.
