NBA Free Agents 2012: Rockets Reportedly Agree to 3-Year Deal with Omer Asik

Sam R. QuinnJun 2, 2018

The Houston Rockets continued to add to their roster this offseason, except their most recent acquisition wasn't through the NBA draft, but through free agency.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, the Rockets have signed seven-footer Omer Asik:

"

Rockets have reached agreement with Omer Asik on a three-year, $25.1 million contract, league source tells Y! Sports.

While the deal may be agreed upon, the Chicago Bulls still have a shot at matching the sizeable offer for their free agent. According to K.C. Johnson and the Chicago Tribune, the Bulls have three days to match.

"

Rockets will sign Omer Asik to 3-year, $25 million deal on July 11. Bulls willhave 3 days to match. 3rd year approaches $15 million.

— K.C Johnson (@KCJHoop) July 1, 2012"

Days from turning 26, the Turkey-born center played in 66 games for the Bulls in 2011-2012, but only started two, and averaged 3.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while playing just 14 minutes per night.

But, like they always say, you can't teach height. The Rockets are not lacking in that department, as most every player on the roster currently stands 6'5" and taller (other than Kyle Lowry who the Rockets are shopping).

Houston didn't get great scoring production from the center spot last season, as Marcus Camby, Jordan Hill and Samuel Dalembert combined to score just 17.4 points per game.

However, none of those three players are under contract with the Rockets any longer.

Kevin McHale's squad finished right in the middle of the pack in rebounds last seasons (15th in the league), and their new seven-footer will certainly help out in that department.

Asik will be remembered by Bulls fans mostly for missing two critical free throws late in Game 6 of the opening round of the 2012 NBA playoffs.

The center was fouled by Spencer Hawes with seven seconds left with the Bulls up one, but couldn't sink either freebie. Asik also fouled Andre Iguodala, sending him to the line where he hit two from the stripe to send the Bulls packing.

The contract may seem a bit steep to many fans, but we won't know if this is a waste of money or a bargain until deal's end. Either way, Asik will likely provide the Rockets with a viable rebounding option for the next few seasons.
