Penn State University: 'Making Life Better'; Now Go Away

Dan StrzempkaJun 30, 2012

To the over 100,000 students, athletes, faculty and staff at Penn State University, I apologize for what I'm about to write. Wait a minute—no I don't.

A state institution allowed a pedophile to prey on children right under their noses, and now they no longer deserve to exist.

Last night, Anderson Cooper and CNN revealed evidence confirming what the rest of the sane world already knew—that Penn State officials, led by the "greatest coach in the history of college football," were complicit in aiding and abetting a serial child rapist.

Penn State University, "Making Life Better."

The e-mails obtained by CNN show exchanges between university VP Gary Schultz, athletic director Tim Curley and university president Graham Spanier (who has still yet to have charges brought against him). The correspondence began 16 days from when Mike McQueary discovered Jerry Sandusky in the shower with one of the victims.

The initial discussions centered on bringing the information to child welfare, as you do when you learn that an older man is forcing children to engage in sexual acts with him.

However, that plan quickly changed after the legendary JoPa got involved in the discussions.

Following a meeting with Joe Paterno, in which they discussed how to handle the situation, Curley stated:

"After giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe yesterday, I am uncomfortable with what we agreed were the next steps."

The new strategy involved not informing outside authorities, and going to Jerry Sandusky directly to let him know there were aware of his actions, and that he should halt this behavior immediately.

Schultz agreed:

"This is a more humane and upfront way to handle this."

If you find it aberrant that the athletic director and the vice president of a university are taking their orders from a football coach, welcome to the state of Pennsylvania.

Curley then sought confirmation from university president Graham Spanier, who doesn't have the obligation of answering to a 74-year-old football coach. Oh, wait...

Spanier replied:

"The only downside for us is if the message (to Sandusky) isn't 'heard' and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it. But that can be assessed down the road...The approach you outline is humane and a reasonable way to proceed."

Indeed, that's the ONLY downside I can think of.

The president of a state institution for higher learning defines the words "humane"and "reasonable"  as protecting the name of a football program, while young children's lives are destroyed by a child-raping monster.

The term "vulnerable" was not used to represent the children who could have been saved (at least four on record after this cover-up) had Paterno and his cronies not put their legacies and financial interests at the forefront, but instead to characterize a university football program with a potential PR problem.

The consequences of this cover-up shouldn't stop now.

Jerry Sandusky has been convicted. Done.

Joe Paterno is dead—too lenient, but done.

Gary Schultz and Tim Curley are facing jail time; Graham Spanier needs to follow.

That still leaves countless Nittany Lion staffers, university faculty and thousands upon thousands of Penn State Football and JoPa blowhards unpunished.

A football program that becomes so big as to be put ahead of children's safety on the depth chart of importance need not exist anymore.

A university that uses the words "humane" and "reasonable" to describe the way they've acted in this situation has no right to continue educating the very youth that they've endangered.

It wouldn't be fair to the nearly 100,000 athletes, students and faculty currently at Penn State who had nothing to do with this; unless you were one of the morons rioting in Paterno's honor. But why would they still want to be there anyway?

Maybe this latest evidence will finally cause the mouth-breathing alumni to open their eyes. Maybe the booster money will stop coming in as they realize that this was an institution-wide decision to harm children.

And maybe, just maybe, the enormous sum of payments due to be paid out in civil lawsuits, in a state already struggling with a budget deficit, will be too deep for the university's pockets, forcing the university into bankruptcy.

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

"We are! Penn State!"

Hopefully, not for much longer.
