Steve Nash: Mavericks Must Add Veteran PG If Unable to Land Deron Williams
Free-agent point guard Steve Nash has been rumored as a target by many franchises across the NBA, but few are as good of a fit as the Dallas Mavericks (from the NY Post). If the Mavericks don’t land Deron Williams, Nash has to be option No. 2.
Besides spending a few seasons as the team’s starting point man, Nash knows the city and knows the ownership. If there was ever a place for a quick stop, it would be a team with which Nash is familiar.
For Dallas, Nash would be added to a position that already features an elderly Jason Kidd. While this is obviously a short-term strategy, the Mavericks are built to win right now. Nash can help make that happen again before Dallas’ window completely closes.
The Dallas Star-Telegram reports the Mavericks may be interested in free-agent Steve Nash:
"If the Dallas Mavericks can't get Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams via free agency or a sign-and-trade, is Steve Nash Plan B? General manager Donnie Nelson's body language acted like he wanted to answer that question, but he knows he'll hear from the NBA -- in terms of a $1 million fine. In fact, Nelson said:
“Believe me I would love to (tell you about Nash). But I can’t touch any of that. There’s a million reasons why I can’t touch that.''
"
While Dallas still must draft a point guard to be the long-term answer if Deron Williams doesn’t agree to sign with the Mavericks, Steve Nash could be a nice one-or-two-year player.
The majority of the Mavs roster is older and approaching the twilight of their careers, so bringing on another veteran to try and squeeze out another championship is not a bad idea.
In fact, it’s Dallas’ only shot at winning again with Dirk Nowitzki if Deron Williams chooses another team in free agency.
Nash may be heading toward retirement, but he has at least one great season in the tank. That season would be best spent with the Mavericks.
