WWE News: Vince McMahon Wanted to Fight Writer Who Disagreed with Him

Imaan JalaliJun 1, 2018

To be a self-made billionaire, or even a multimillionaire, one has to have an unflappable strength of character.

After all, if one allows others to step on his or her toes, one will not gain the proper respect to not only ascend, but stay atop the summit of success.

Sometimes, however, businessmen take that course of action too far to the point where their egos cannot bear to listen to a "dissident" voice.

Ideally, leadership in high-ranking circles necessitates the acceptance of all perspectives, even those along the difficult-to-see periphery.

Of course, for bosses who become used to their daily dose of workplace flattery, the mere thought that they could be wrong falls outside the bounds of comprehension.

Vince McMahon, like many head honchos, finds it difficult to defer to a viewpoint other than his own.

According to 411Mania.com (via MLW radio), former SmackDown writer Alex Greenfield found this out the hard way:

"

We're standing right outside the arena. There are fans way back behind the fence wondering what Mr. McMahon is yelling at this little Jewish kid for. I just refused to back down. I was like, 'My way is the right way. You did it wrong.' He said, 'Damnit, I wish you were 6'7" and I said, 'I'm not, but I'm standing right here.'

And there was a moment in that conversation where I thought he was just going to haul off and punch me in the face. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking like a badass here like I would have won this confrontation necessarily. He probably would have broken my jaw.

But he really thought about it. I'm convinced to this day that he thought about knocking the [expletive] out of me.

"

Anywhere else in the corporate domain, a lower-level employee might find him/herself on the receiving end of a diatribe by his or her employer for not erring on the side of caution.

In the wrestling sphere, though, a "recalcitrant" employee might have to cover more than just his or her ears, but head as well.

Truth be told, the WWE is unlike any other company where a stringent political correctness rules the land. In the WWE Universe, there is a network of "boys" in the back who do as they wish, not so different from the perpetually pugnacious characters they play in the ring.

The man who orchestrates the WWE circus—Vince McMahon—is not so dissimilar from his alter ego, Mr. McMahon.

He, like the wrestlers who solve their problems with physical aggression, is also at the mercy of his impulse to pounce at the first sign of opposition.

Suffice it to say, Alex Greenfield is lucky he did not sustain a concussion. Not to mention, the other writers who were spared should know by now that sycophancy is the key to their job survival.
