With the added intrigue of Ronaldo having to play against many of his Real Madrid teammates, many fans and experts are wondering about whether that’s an advantage or disadvantage.
The Portuguese are counting on the talented striker to be on his game against the teammates he trains against on a regular basis. If there is a weakness, Ronaldo must give his national squad the edge and capitalize on it.
As if the semifinals of the 2012 Euro Cup wasn’t action packed enough, adding the Ronaldo element only broadens the spectrum in which we view this matchup. This has instant classic written all over it.
Cesc Fabregas
While the Spanish have used their playmaking off the bench and in the starting lineup, it will be imperative that Fabregas plays as much of the game as he physically can. They need him on the pitch if they want a chance to beat the red hot Portuguese.
While needing Fernando Torres to come through with some quality finishes, Fabregas has maintained the team’s offensive pace and scored two goals himself. The playmaker is obviously playing with an intense fire, and his teammates must feed off that.
Prediction
Portugal 2, Spain 1
After a huge performance, the world will not be able to question Ronaldo’s clutch factor. This will be the soccer equivalent of LeBron James finally getting his NBA title.
There will be plenty of praise to go around if Portugal shocks the Spaniards, but just as most of the blame falls at the feet of Ronaldo, so will most of the credit. This time, though, it will be well deserved.
Ronaldo is on a scoring hot streak right now, and the Spanish defense has looked weak at times during group play. If the Portuguese can force the pressure right down the middle, Ronaldo will get his chance to advance his team.
