A-Rod Interview Fires Up The Proletariat

Jack BenderFeb 11, 2009

During the NFL season, I write a weekly blog about Fantasy Football.  In the blog, I make some picks about Fantasy players and I also pick every NFL game against the spread.  I really do not have that many readers, but one faithful reader occasionally sends me e-mails about sports topics.  He sent me this A-Rod/Atlanta sports radio inspired rant earlier this week:

"So I decided the other day that in this competitive business climate that I needed a little extra boost.  I needed that extra edge.  I work as a warehouse manager but I also do much of the copywriting where I am employed to build web pages.

Needless to say I'm spread pretty thin.

I was increasingly exhausted, and have a lot of days where I did not feel like getting out of bed, so I decided to start popping amphetamines.

Yeah, I knew they were not really "legal," but who was concerned with that?  In the employee handbook there was nothing explicitly stating I could not use them, so since it was not in my employer's rule book, I thought I was safe.

Later on, when everyone found out how I had been able to work 22 hours a day for the last six weeks, I just blamed it on the company and my boss.  They had to have known something was up when I started spending 18 hours a day here.  They knew I was doing something to enhance my performance at work, but they turned a blind eye and just enjoyed the benefits.

AND, they didn't make me take a drug test.  How can they hold me responsible?  I mean, the economy is in a recession, but we've felt little ill effects of it.  In part, I feel this is due to my increased productivity and them being able to save on payroll by not having to hire a programmer to build and maintain our web pages or a copywriter.

Even though I'm 30 (I'M A MAN!), I don't feel this is any way my fault.

I knew the warehouse manager at our largest competitor was doing it.  It was just a different culture back then.... six months ago.  There was just such a tremendous pressure to perform consistently, to stay ahead of the competition, that I felt I needed to prove that I deserved that big raise I recently received.

So I say my boss and my company are to blame.  I see no fault in what I have done, despite consuming an illicit drug.

Anyway, that was two weeks ago, and now I'm sorry.  I didn't do any of this for recreationit was all for my job.  I was young back then and extremely naive.

I don't remember where I got my amphetamines, or what exactly they were, but I feel good about COMPLETELY coming clean now.  It feels so good to tell the truth, and I hope my friends, family and co-workers will forgive me, and we can all just move on with our lives.

Conclusion....  Kevin either:  A) gets fired or B) gets fired and goes to jail."

I hate to put words in his mouth, but I think Kevin is saying something about the culture we are living in today.  Cheating, lying, stealing, and doing drugs are all wrong, but we are justifying our actions by saying we have to feed our families or whatever—the old "the ends justify the means argument."
