NBA Draft 2012: Predicting Future All-Star Weekend Studs

Tim KeeneyMay 31, 2018

While NBA general managers are just concerned with drafting a prospect who will have a positive impact in the league, the real question is simple. Who will dominate All-Star Weekend?

Sure, if the special weekend continues down its current path, it won't last much longer, but that doesn't mean we can't look forward to young studs who could eventually save the formerly awesome event.

Like Mario would say, here we go

Future Point-Guard-Obstacle-Course-Thingy Winner: Kendall Marshall

You know the contest I'm talking about. The one where no one gives a flying (expletive) and jogs through it at about 45 percent.

I won't spend much time on this one because there's a good chance it won't be around much longer.

Nonetheless, Marshall is easily the best passer in this draft, and he strikes me as someone who would take the course seriously.

He would easily get through the passing targets, and while he's not the fastest guy in the world, Steve Nash won the thing twice, so Marshall could as well.

He might struggle with the top-of-the-key three-pointer, but if he drains that, it will be a clean run, and usually that's all you need to win this thing.

Future Three-Point Contest Winner: John Jenkins

I went back and forth on this one because there are plenty of sharp-shooters in this draft who could win the three-point contest.

Jenkins is clearly the best pure long-range shooter in the draft, but sometimes the contest doesn't come down to the best shooter.

Sometimes it's the guy who uses the least amount of effort in his shot and just has the best pure stroke. That leads me to believe someone like Harrison Barnes would win, but I'm still going with Jenkins.

He shot a ridiculous 44 percent from three during his last year with Vanderbilt, and he has the quickest release of anyone in the class.

Pure shooting guards don't always win, but Jenkins would change that.

Other Potential winners: Harrison Barnes, Doron Lamb, Bradley Beal

Future Dunk Contest Winner: Miles Plumlee

Ugh. Watching the Plumlee brothers play at Duke is one of my least favorite things ever, but I won't let my bias stand in the way here.

When it comes down to it, this guy is just under seven-feet tall, and according to draftexpress.com, his vertical is a ridiculous 40.5'. That's second of all prospects in the draft.

And he's 7'0". And he has a 40.5" vertical. And he's seven—OK, you get the idea.

I'll just let the videos do the talking.

He doesn't bring any flashiness, but if Dwight Howard can win the thing, so can Plumlee.

Just know that you'll probably hate life and the NBA after he wins. Nothing new. Ahem, Jeremy Evans.

Other Potential winners: Darius Johnson-Odom, Terrence Ross, Jeremy Lamb

Future All-Star MVP Winner: Dion Waiters

No offense to Anthony Davis, but the All-Star MVP is all about who will get out in transition, who will take a bunch of shots and who will score about 40 points in 12 minutes.

Davis could very well come in and grab 10 rebounds and block eight shots, but he'll still probably get snubbed in an All-Star game.

Scorers are more important, and there are a lot of scorers in this draft, but none seem to be able to put the ball in the hoop as quickly as Waiters.

He's had comparisons to Dwyane Wade, his stock is soaring, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him make a few All-Star games in his career. Once there, he has the skills to take over in an open, fast-paced game.

Other Potential Winners: Harrison Barnes, Bradley Beal, Austin Rivers, Damian Lillard, Thomas Robinson
