NBA Rumors: Steve Nash Would Bring More Entertainment Than Wins to Knicks

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

Steve Nash would be a welcome addition to the New York Knicks, but having him around would bring more entertainment to Madison Square Garden than wins to the team's final record.

That's not to say that Nash's arrival would be detrimental to the Knicks' final record and playoff hopes—because he would certainly help the team win games—but his presence is not a necessity to the Knicks finishing with a better record than last season.

According to ESPN's Jared Zwerling, the unrestricted free agent said this:

"The Knicks are a great franchise, and I live in New York City (each summer), so I'd definitely consider them if they were interested," the Phoenix Suns' mainstay said at a promotional appearance in Manhattan.

"

I would love to see the All-Star point guard reunite with Amar'e Stoudemire. He would bring STAT back to his youthful, more agile years. Nash might prolong Stoudemire's imminent demise that has been accelerated by the lack of a true point guard in New York.

Nash could talk some sense into Carmelo Anthony and help him stray from his ball-stopper style of offense. Well, talking probably wouldn't work—it would likely be more of a lead-by-example type of influence. Passing is as infectious as good defense, and there's no better passer than Nash.

He would work a perfect pick-and-roll with Tyson Chandler. Not only the pick-and-roll, but the pick-and-alley-oop at which Chandler is the master.

Jeremy Lin could become a true point guard under the guidance of Nash. He would stop throwing pick-and-roll passes at Stoudemire's ankles and would learn the ins and outs of becoming a perfect passer from Nash.

Those are a lot of hypothetical situations. A lot of things would have to go perfectly for the above four aspects of the Knicks' team to change.

Stoudemire isn't anywhere near the player that he used to be. That much was painfully obvious for most of the regular season and playoffs.

If Anthony's style is changed, he will no longer be the unstoppable offensive juggernaut that he has molded himself into.

Mike Woodson still has to figure out a way to get Stoudemire and Chandler to work effectively together in the paint. That was a huge problem last season, and Nash would have to do a lot to fix that.

As Nash's understudy, Lin would learn a lot, but he would also lose a lot of playing time. Nash is 38 years old, but he plays the same amount of minutes as players nearly half his age.

If everything worked out perfectly, Nash to the Knicks would turn them into a force, but we hardly see everything work out perfectly for the Knicks.

It would be exciting and entertaining to watch Nash on the court with STAT, Melo, Chandler and Shumpert/Fields/TBD free agent, but maybe it's better in theory than it would be in practice.

If the Knicks, Lin and Steve Novak win their Bird Rights case, it would make more sense for James Dolan to spend his mid-level exception on a shooting guard, rather than Nash. Woodson needs another player on the court who can space the floor while playing starter's minutes (and not J.R. Smith).

Nash would help the team in terms of bringing up their level of intensity and level of play, but there are more pressing issues on the roster.

Bringing Nash to New York would be fun, but it would be more of a luxury than a necessity.
