2012 MLB All-Star Game: Full Roster Predictions and Each Teams' Biggest Snub
The 2012 MLB All-Star Game is under a month away, and the game will be played at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City this season.
As fan voting updates continue to come in, we can start to get an idea of what the starting lineups may look like. However, it is who fills out the rosters from there that makes things interesting.
What follows are my full roster predictions for both the NL and AL, as well as who I feel would be the biggest snub from each team based on my predictions.
Predicted AL All-Star Roster

2B Robinson Cano, New York
1B Prince Fielder, Detroit

DH David Ortiz, Boston
Outfielders
RF Jose Bautista, Toronto
CF Curtis Granderson, New York
LF Josh Hamilton, Texas
CF Adam Jones, Baltimore
CF Mike Trout, Los Angeles
LF Mark Trumbo, Los Angeles
Baltimore Orioles: 1B Chris Davis
2 of 32Stats: .288/.335/.507, 12 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R
Beat Out By
Detroit 1B Prince Fielder (starter)
Chicago 1B Paul Konerko
Overview
Davis has managed to cut down his strikeouts a bit and is making more consistent contact, leading to the best numbers of his career to this point. He came to the Orioles with Tommy Hunter for Koji Uehara at the deadline last year, and still only 26 years old, he could be a major contributor for the Orioles for the next several seasons.
Predicted Orioles All-Stars
CF Adam Jones
SP Jason Hammel
RP Jim Johnson
Boston Red Sox: C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
3 of 32Stats: .257/.299/.538, 12 HR, 33 RBI, 23 R
Beat Out By
Rangers C Mike Napoli (starter)
Twins C Joe Mauer
Overview
Saltalamacchia saw regular at-bats for the first time in his career last season and rewarded the Red Sox with a 16 HR, 56 RBI season. He's been even better this season, as his average is up 20 points to a respectable level; and he leads all catchers with 12 home runs on the season.
Predicted Red Sox All-Stars
DH David Ortiz
New York Yankees: RP Rafael Soriano
4 of 32Stats: 27 G, 2-0, 13-of-14 SV, 1.78 ERA, 22 K, 25.1 IP
Beat Out By
Baltimore RP Jim Johnson
Cleveland RP Chris Perez
Oakland RP Ryan Cook
Tampa Bay RP Fernando Rodney
Texas RP Joe Nathan
Overview
The Yankees were dealt a big blow when future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera was lost for the season with a freak injury. Things then went from bad to worse when setup man David Robertson went down with an injury. However, Soriano has stepped up huge and locked down the closer's role, rebounding from a somewhat disappointing debut season in New York last year.
Predicted Yankees All-Stars
2B Robinson Cano
SS Derek Jeter (starter)
CF Curtis Granderson (starter)
SP C.C. Sabathia
Tampa Bay Rays: RF Matt Joyce
5 of 32Stats: .283/.391/.520, 11 HR, 34 RBI, 36 R
Beat Out By
Baltimore CF Adam Jones
Los Angeles LF Mark Trumbo
Los Angeles CF Mike Trout (final vote)
New York CF Curtis Granderson (starter)
Texas LF Josh Hamilton (starter)
Toronto RF Jose Bautista (starter)
Overview
An All-Star last season after a breakout first half, Joyce has carried the Rays offense with Evan Longoria on the disabled list; and while his odds of making the team this year look slim, he has been arguably the Rays' most valuable player to this point.
Predicted Rays All-Stars
SP David Price
RP Fernando Rodney
Toronto Blue Jays: DH Edwin Encarnacion
6 of 32Stats: .277/.346/.554, 18 HR, 45 RBI, 37 R
Beat Out By
Boston DH David Ortiz (starter)
Kansas City DH Billy Butler
Overview
Encarnacion has been quietly productive over the past two seasons with the Blue Jays, averaging 19 home runs and 53 runs batted in.
However, in a contract year he has taken his game to another level this season and the 29-year-old is setting himself up for a nice payday. He carried the offense when Jose Bautista slumped badly early, but he'll lose out to David Ortiz in the fan vote and Billy Butler as the hometown choice.
Predicted Blue Jays All-Stars
RF Jose Bautista (starter)
SP Brandon Morrow
Chicago White Sox: C A.J. Pierzynski
7 of 32Stats: .286/.329/.512, 12 HR, 41 RBI, 32 R
Beat Out By
Minnesota C Joe Mauer
Texas C Mike Napoli (starter)
Overview
From 2003-2009, Pierzynski averaged a line of .283 BA, 14 HR, 61 RBI as one of the more consistent offensive catchers in the league. However, his numbers have dropped a bit in the past two seasons as one would expect from a catcher on the wrong side of 30.
He's bounced back strong this year, though, and is on pace for a career year at the age of 35 if he can keep it up. The Twins need an All-Star, or he'd be the choice over Mauer.
Predicted White Sox All-Stars
1B Paul Konerko
SP Jake Peavy
SP Chris Sale
Cleveland Indians: 2B Jason Kipnis
8 of 32Stats: .280/.334/.448, 11 HR, 41 RBI, 46 R, 17 SB
Beat Out By
New York 2B Robinson Cano
Texas 2B Ian Kinsler (starter)
Overview
A year after Asdrubal Cabrera came out of nowhere to post terrific power numbers, another unheralded slugger has emerged for the Tribe in Kipnis. Always a highly regarded prospect, his power surge is nonetheless unexpected as he never hit more than 16 home runs in the minor leagues. If three second baseman make the roster, he'd be the third.
Predicted Indians All-Stars
RP Chris Perez
Detroit Tigers: CF Austin Jackson
9 of 32Stats: .323/.415/.551, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 35 R
Beat Out By
Baltimore CF Adam Jones
Los Angeles LF Mark Trumbo
Los Angeles CF Mike Trout (final vote)
New York CF Curtis Granderson (starter)
Texas LF Josh Hamilton (starter)
Toronto RF Jose Bautista (starter)
Overview
Had it not been for an injury that cost him a few weeks, Jackson would have undoubtedly made the All-Star team and he still might. He's cut down on his strikeouts, increased his walks and is finally the true leadoff hitter the Tigers have hoped he would become.
Predicted Tigers All-Stars
1B Prince Fielder (starter)
3B Miguel Cabrera
SP Justin Verlander
Kansas City Royals: RP Jonathan Broxton
10 of 32Stats: 26 G, 1-1, 16-of-19 SV, 1.69 ERA, 20 K, 26.2 IP
Beat Out By
Baltimore RP Jim Johnson
Cleveland RP Chris Perez
Oakland RP Ryan Cook
Tampa Bay RP Fernando Rodney
Texas RP Joe Nathan
Overview
After back-to-back All-Star seasons in 2008 and 2009, Broxton struggled to a 5.68 ERA through his first 14 outings before arm problems ended what was a contract year.
After generating little interest on the free-agent market, he signed a one-year, $4 million deal to setup Joakim Soria in Kansas City. However, when Soria went down for the season with an injury, he returned to the closer's role, and he has been terrific.
Predicted Royals All-Stars
DH Billy Butler
Minnesota Twins: LF Josh Willingham
11 of 32Stats: .276/.387/.538, 13 HR, 45 RBI, 37 R
Beat Out By
Baltimore CF Adam Jones
Los Angeles LF Mark Trumbo
Los Angeles CF Mike Trout (final vote)
New York CF Curtis Granderson (starter)
Texas LF Josh Hamilton (starter)
Toronto RF Jose Bautista (starter)
Overview
Willingham quietly enjoyed a very good year with the A's last season when he had 29 HR and 98 RBI hitting in an anemic offense. That was enough to earn him a three-year, $21 million contract from the Twins to replace Michael Cuddyer.
He's been the team's best power threat so far this season with a .925 OPS, but outfield in the AL is likely too deep from him to make it.
Predicted Twins All-Stars
C Joe Mauer
Los Angeles Angels: RP Ernesto Frieri
12 of 32Stats: 19 G, 0-0, 7-of-7 SV, 0.00 ERA, 35 K, 19.1 IP with Angels
30 G, 1-0, 7-of-7 SV, 0.87 ERA, 53 K, 31 IP total
Beat Out By
Baltimore RP Jim Johnson
Cleveland RP Chris Perez
Oakland RP Ryan Cook
Tampa Bay RP Fernando Rodney
Texas RP Joe Nathan
Overview
Acquired from the Padres for infielder Alexi Amarista (.186 BA), Frieri has been nearly untouchable since joining the Angels. He's allowed just three hits and 13 walks in 19.1 innings of work for a 0.83 WHIP. More and more setup relievers have made the All-Star team of late, so he's got an outside chance.
Predicted Angels All-Stars
LF Mark Trumbo
CF Mike Trout
SP Jered Weaver
SP C.J. Wilson
Oakland Athletics: RF Josh Reddick
13 of 32Stats: .265/.337/.518, 15 HR, 33 RBI, 43 R
Beat Out By
Baltimore CF Adam Jones
Los Angeles LF Mark Trumbo
Los Angeles CF Mike Trout (final vote)
New York CF Curtis Granderson (starter)
Texas LF Josh Hamilton (starter)
Toronto RF Jose Bautista (starter)
Overview
Acquired from the Red Sox for closer Andrew Bailey, Reddick has given the A's some much needed pop in the middle of the order. However, he's cooled after a hot start, and the A's likely won't have more than one All-Star. I'll give the nod to reliever Ryan Cook (0.61 ERA, 9.4 K/9), who recently assumed the closer role and has been lights out all season.
Predicted A's All-Stars
RP Ryan Cook
Seattle Mariners: RP Lucas Luetge
14 of 32Stats: 25 G, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 15 K, 16.2 IP
Beat Out By
Baltimore RP Jim Johnson
Cleveland RP Chris Perez
Oakland RP Ryan Cook
Tampa Bay RP Fernando Rodney
Texas RP Joe Nathan
Overview
The definition of a lefty specialist, Luetge has allowed just two hits in 29 at-bats to left-handers this season, while right-handers have hit .269 against him on the season. He's the only pitcher with at least seven innings of work without an ERA.
Predicted Mariners All-Stars
SP Felix Hernandez
Texas Rangers: SS Elvis Andrus
15 of 32Stats: .298/.373/.405, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 42 R, 13 SB
Beat Out By
New York SS Derek Jeter
Overview
Andrus broke into the big leagues as a slick fielding shortstop with good speed and an average-at-best bat. However, he has improved every season since his debut, and he's taken another big step forward this season.
His average and OBP are up, as is his SB success rate, and while I'm only predicting one shortstop on the All-Star roster, he'd be next in line if there ends up being two.
Predicted Rangers All-Stars

Los Angeles SP Clayton Kershaw
New York SP R.A. Dickey
Philadelphia SP Cole Hamels
Pittsburgh SP James McDonald
San Francisco SP Matt Cain
St. Louis SP Lance Lynn
Washington SP Gio Gonzalez
Washington SP Stephen Strasburg
Overview
Tied for the MLB lead in ERA among starters, Beachy has been one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2012 season so far. Given his success, you'd think he'd be a shoe-in for the All-Star roster, but a recent injury will likely hurt his case.
He hit the disabled list Sunday with a partially torn UCL and according to USA Today, could wind up needing Tommy John surgery, and while it would be nice to still see him recognized, it's doubtful.
Predicted Braves All-Stars
2B Dan Uggla (starter)
RP Craig Kimbrel
Miami Marlins: 2B Omar Infante
18 of 32Stats: .281/.307/.443, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 31 R
Beat Out By
Atlanta 2B Dan Uggla (starter)
Houston 2B Jose Altuve
Overview
A much maligned All-Star in 2010 while playing with the Braves, a case can be made for Infante to play in the game again this season. However, after a .328 BA, 5 HR, 7 RBI start to the season, he's hit just .264 with one home run and has had13 RBI since then and likely won't make the roster.
Predicted Marlins All-Stars
RF Giancarlo Stanton
New York Mets: SP Johan Santana

Los Angeles SP Clayton Kershaw
New York SP R.A. Dickey
Philadelphia SP Cole Hamels
Pittsburgh SP James McDonald
San Francisco SP Matt Cain
St. Louis SP Lance Lynn
Washington SP Gio Gonzalez
Washington SP Stephen Strasburg
Overview
After missing all of last season following shoulder surgery, the 33-year-old Santana has come back strong this season. He threw a no-hitter against the Cardinals on June 1st and has given the Mets a reliable arm alongside R.A. Dickey at the top of the rotation. In the end, there are simply too many pitchers in the NL having better seasons.
Predicted Mets All-Stars
3B David Wright (starter)
SP R.A. Dickey
Philadelphia Phillies: RF Hunter Pence
20 of 32Stats: .277/.342/.469, 13 HR, 40 RBI, 46 R

Los Angeles RF Andre Ethier
Los Angeles CF Matt Kemp (starter)
Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton
Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun (starter)
Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen
San Francisco LF Melky Cabrera
St. Louis RF Carlos Beltran (starter)
Overview
Pence enjoyed a career year last season and played his best baseball after coming over from the Astros at the deadline as he hit .324 with 11 HR and 35 RBI in 54 games with the Phillies. He's having a nice season again this year, but there are simply too many worthy outfielders in the NL this season for him to earn a nod.
Predicted Phillies All-Stars
C Carlos Ruiz
SP Cole Hamels
RP Jonathan Papelbon
Washington Nationals: RP Craig Stammen

Beat Out By
Atlanta RP Craig Kimbrel
Cincinnati RP Aroldis Chapman
Philadelphia RP Jonathan Papelbon
San Francisco RP Santiago Casilla
Washington RP Tyler Clippard
Overview
The entire Nationals staff has been terrific this season, and a number of relievers are worthy of recognition as Stammen, Sean Burnett (28 G, 1.17 ERA), Tyler Clippard (30 G, 2.15 ERA) and Ryan Mattheus (20 G, 2.21 ERA) have all been terrific in the late innings.
Clippard will likely get the edge thanks to nine saves, but Stammen might be the best of the bunch right now.

SP Stephen Strasburg
RP Tyler Clippard
Chicago Cubs: 1B Bryan LaHair
22 of 32Stats: .299/.380/.572, 13 HR, 28 RBI, 28 R
Beat Out By
Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto (starter)
Overview
After a monster season at Triple-A last year, the Cubs handed the 29-year-old LaHair the starting first base job to open the season. He started off red hot with a .388 BA, 7 HR, 16 RBI line through his first 22 games, and the combination of his cool down since then and the fact that he is a relative unknown, spells snub for LaHair.
Predicted Cubs All-Stars
SS Starlin Castro
Cincinnati Reds: RF Jay Bruce
23 of 32Stats: .259/.333/.544, 16 HR, 46 RBI, 37 R

Los Angeles RF Andre Ethier
Los Angeles CF Matt Kemp (starter)
Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton
Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun (starter)
Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen
San Francisco LF Melky Cabrera
St. Louis RF Carlos Beltran (starter)
Overview
Bruce is never going to hit for a high average (.257 career hitter), but he has developed into one of the game's top power hitters. After slugging a career high 32 long balls last season, he's on pace for another season of at least 30 home runs this season. However, a deep field of NL outfielders will likely keep him on the outside looking in.
Predicted Reds All-Stars
1B Joey Votto (starter)
SP Johnny Cueto
RP Aroldis Chapman
Houston Astros: SS Jed Lowrie
24 of 32Stats: .271/.350/.505, 13 HR, 30 RBI, 29 R
Beat Out By
Chicago SS Starlin Castro
St. Louis SS Rafael Furcal
Overview
Acquired from the Red Sox for reliever Mark Melancon, Lowrie is finally showing what he is capable of when healthy and playing everyday. He leads all shortstops in home runs and has a .854 OPS. If he played for a contender, he'd likely make it; but the Astros will only have one representative and it'll be Altuve.
Predicted Astros All-Stars
2B Jose Altuve
Milwaukee Brewers: SP Zack Greinke

Los Angeles SP Clayton Kershaw
New York SP R.A. Dickey
Philadelphia SP Cole Hamels
Pittsburgh SP James McDonald
San Francisco SP Matt Cain
St. Louis SP Lance Lynn
Washington SP Gio Gonzalez
Washington SP Stephen Strasburg
Overview
With the Brewers struggling and Greinke in his contract year, it will be interesting to see if he is made available at the deadline should Milwaukee decide to blow things up. He's having a terrific season and is my pick as first replacement when one of the above mentioned starters bows out for whatever reason.
Predicted Brewers All-Stars
LF Ryan Braun (starter)
Pittsburgh Pirates: RP Joel Hanrahan
26 of 32Stats: 27 G, 3-0, 17-of-19 SV, 2.42 ERA, 31 K, 26 IP
Beat Out By
Atlanta RP Craig Kimbrel
Cincinnati RP Aroldis Chapman
Philadelphia RP Jonathan Papelbon
San Francisco RP Santiago Casilla
Washington RP Tyler Clippard
Overview
Hanrahan came out of relative obscurity to make the All-Star team last season, and he ended the year with 40 saves and a 1.83 ERA. He's been solid again this season, and my guess is it will be either him or McDonald that make the roster but not both, and I think McDonald has the upper hand as of now.
Predicted Pirates All-Stars
CF Andrew McCutchen
SP James McDonald
St. Louis Cardinals: C Yadier Molina
27 of 32Stats: .324/.378/.511, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 29 R
Beat Out By
Philadelphia C Carlos Ruiz
San Francisco C Buster Posey (starter)
Overview
It's hard to imagine NL manager Tony LaRussa leaving Molina off the roster, and he could still overtake Buster Posey for starting honors; but if it comes down to a choice between Molina and Ruiz as the backup, Ruiz has better numbers across the board at a .358 BA with 9 HR, 38 RBI and 30 R.
Predicted Cardinals All-Stars
SS Rafael Furcal (starter)
RF Carlos Beltran (starter)

Los Angeles CF Matt Kemp (starter)
Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton
Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun (starter)
Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen
San Francisco LF Melky Cabrera
St. Louis RF Carlos Beltran (starter)
Overview
Signed to a two-year, $16 million contract this season, many wondered why the Diamondbacks signed Kubel as it pushed Gold Glove winner Gerardo Parra to the bench.
However, with Chris Young, Justin Upton and Miguel Montero struggling, he has carried the offensive load this season. With an incredibly deep field of NL outfielders, he doesn't have much of a chance at making the team, though.
Predicted Diamondbacks All-Stars
SP Wade Miley
Colorado Rockies: RF Michael Cuddyer

Los Angeles CF Matt Kemp (starter)
Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton
Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun (starter)
Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen
San Francisco LF Melky Cabrera
St. Louis RF Carlos Beltran (starter)
Overview
Really there is no Rockies player deserving of All-Star recognition outside of CarGo, and while Cuddyer has been a solid run producer and currently ranks 14th in the NL in RBI, he is by no means deserving of making the team over any of the above mentioned players.
Predicted Rockies All-Stars
LF Carlos Gonzalez
Los Angeles Dodgers: C A.J. Ellis
30 of 32Stats: .302/.434/.459, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 23 R
Beat Out By
Philadelphia C Carlos Ruiz
San Francisco C Buster Posey (starter)
Overview
After seeing limited big-league action for the past four years, the 31-year-old Ellis finally took over as the everyday catcher this season, and he has been a very pleasant surprise.
The number that jumps out at you is his .434 OBP, which ranks third in the NL and is the best mark among catchers. Lack of name recognition and a career year from Carlos Ruiz will likely keep Ellis off the roster, but he's deserving.

Overview
Much like with the Rockies, there is really no one on the Padres worthy of All-Star recognition beyond Chase Headley (.267/.376/.424, 7 HR, 32 RBI) who will more than likely be their representative, even he is far from All-Star material.
Volquez has enjoyed a nice bounce back season this year, but he's not an All-Star; he's simply having a passable season on a really bad team.
Predicted Padres All-Stars
3B Chase Headley
San Francisco Giants: RP Sergio Romo
32 of 32Stats: 26 G, 2-1, 3-of-3 SV, 0.93 ERA, 25 K, 19.1 IP
Beat Out By
Atlanta RP Craig Kimbrel
Cincinnati RP Aroldis Chapman
Philadelphia RP Jonathan Papelbon
San Francisco RP Santiago Casilla
Washington RP Tyler Clippard
Overview
Romo was one of the hardest players to leave off of my projected roster, but in the end, the fact that he has only thrown 19.1 innings on the season kept him off the team. That said, he's been terrific as he's paired with Santiago Casilla (19-of-20 SV, 1.32 ERA) to help ease the loss of Brian Wilson to a season-ending injury.
