NBA Rumors: Celtics Would Be Foolish to Make Offer to Bulls Center Omer Asik
The Boston Celtics would be insane to make any kind of offer to Chicago Bulls center Omer Asik because he is not the kind of center that the team needs.
Per NBA.com:
"The Celtics are one the teams said to be considering a strong offer to Bulls center Asik. The thinking is it might help them retain Kevin Garnett, who though playing very well at center the second half of the season doesn’t want to return as a center.
"
The Celtics need a strong center who won't get bullied in the paint and who has a strong offensive game. Asik might be able to block shots pretty well, but his offensive game is a bit limited.
His low-post scoring ability is average at best, and he won't take opposing big men out of the paint with his inability to hit the mid-range jump shot.
While finding a starting center that will allow Garnett to move to his natural power forward position is a priority for the Celtics, if he comes back for next season, Asik is not the man that Boston should pursue.
Asik averaged 21.9 minutes per game of playing time in the playoffs this year, but he only averaged 3.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
If the Celtics are willing to make an offer for a restricted free agent center, then they should pursue Indiana Pacers star Roy Hibbert. He would be the perfect big man partner for Garnett.
The Celtics should have tons of salary cap space this summer, but general manager Danny Ainge cannot spend it foolishly. If there aren't any free agents that would be a great fit on the roster, then Boston shouldn't make any signings. Don't spend just because you have space under the cap.
Asik isn't the answer for Boston, and the Celtics must not make him an offer when there are better players to pursue for the team's frontcourt needs.
