Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Must Hope Charlotte Bobcats Don't Draft Him at No. 2

Adam FromalJun 7, 2018

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, as a highly thought of top-five talent in the 2012 NBA draft, shouldn't fall into conventional thinking and hope to be drafted as high as possible.

The former Kentucky Wildcat standout obviously isn't going to be taken at No. 1, seeing as that spot is all but reserved for Anthony Davis, his teammate back in Lexington. MKG must cross his fingers though and hope that the Charlotte Bobcats don't retain the rights to the No. 2 pick and use it to bring him under the wing of Michael Jordan.

It would be a far better situation for the forward to fall to No. 3 and line up alongside John Wall with the Washington Wizards, despite the drop in prestige and possible decline in starting salary. Here are the two primary reasons that MKG should buck the trend and hope he drops in the draft.

He's a Winner

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's best attributes are his intangibles and motor. He never stops trying and his unrelenting physical presence inspires confidence in his teammates.

As cliche as it may be, MKG is a winner.

While still in high school, he was part of the gold medal-winning team at the FIBA U-17 World Championships. Then, during his one season in Lexington under John Calipari, Kidd-Gilchrist was a major part of the squad that took home the NCAA title.

He's used to winning. He strives to win. He loves winning.

The Charlotte Bobcats aren't winners right now. While they may compete one day, this franchise is in for a long rebuilding process without much of a light at the end of the tunnel right now.

MKG's drive would be wasted on the Bobcats at the beginning of his career and he knows that. He's not a franchise-changing player like The Unibrow, even if he is a great prospect.

Playing Styles Don't Mesh

Just like he knows that he's a winner, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist knows that he's an offensively limited player until he develops a jumper with anything that even resembles consistency.

With his athletic and physical tools, MKG can dominate in transition while affecting the game on the glass and the less-glamorous defensive end of the court. The effect that he has in those areas is large enough to negate the lack of offense at this point in his young career.

The Charlotte Bobcats don't need a defender right now. They need a go-to scorer who can take over the game when Kemba Walker struggles and Bismack Biyombo is busy blocking shots and learning what the word "offense" means. In a lot of ways, a talent like MKG would be wasted in the Bobcats' current system.

On the right team, like the Wizards, where he can run early and often while letting other players do the bulk of the scoring, MKG would stand out. He'll look more like a bust if he's forced into too many shots, as he would be on the Bobcats.

The prestige associated with the No. 2 pick may be greater, as would the historical significance of two Wildcats being selected with the first two picks, but if MKG is smart, he'll hope he drops to No. 3.
