NBA Free Agents 2012: Kevin Garnett & Stars Who Should Re-Sign with Current Team

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Boston Celtics star forward Kevin Garnett is one of the top free agents who would be best served re-signing with his current team in free agency.

While many players often look to leave their current teams in free agency to maximize their options and make more money, they often fail to realize that leaving a good team and a situation they have excelled in for years can be a bad move.

Let's look at three star free agents who should stay put this summer.

Jason Terry, Dallas Mavericks

Jason Terry is one of the best sixth men in basketball and someone who can bring scoring off the bench for the Dallas Mavericks.

He is 34 years old but was still able to average 15 points per game this season, which was just below his career scoring average.

The Mavericks need to add depth to their team for next season, because they didn't have enough of it this year. The roster needs to get younger, but Terry is still a top scoring guard who the team probably won't have to make a long-term commitment to.

Dallas will be a contender in the Western Conference next season, and since owner Mark Cuban is willing to spend money to build the best roster possible, there's no better team for Terry to end his career with than the Mavericks.

Eric Gordon, New Orleans Hornets

Eric Gordon is a restricted free agent, but since the New Orleans Hornets were one of the worst teams in the NBA last year, it will be interesting to see how willing he is to commit long-term to this franchise.

When you look at the future, this team is heading in the right direction. It finally has a new owner, has a roster of good, young players and is expected to add Kentucky star Anthony Davis with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NBA draft.

Gordon can be the No. 1 man in New Orleans if he re-signs, and he would be a fan favorite for pledging his future to the team after all the turmoil the fans have gone through over the years.

He and Davis would be a spectacular combo, and Gordon has a chance to do something really special in New Orleans if he re-signs.

Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics

If future Hall of Fame forward Kevin Garnett doesn't want to retire after a brilliant career, then the only team he should play for is the Boston Celtics.

Here's what former teammate Kendrick Perkins told Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe regarding Garnett's future:

"

“I feel like if he does return to basketball, I think that that would be the team,’’ Perkins said of the Celtics. “I heard Kevin say a few times that he wouldn’t want to play for anybody but Doc, so it will be interesting to see. I still think he got a lot more years in him. He got a lot of love for the game and it would be hard to see Kevin walk away from the game right now.’’

"

Garnett is loved in Boston. He's embraced the city and the fans, and his teammates are fond of him as well. There's absolutely no reason for him to leave the Celtics. No coach handles veterans in the NBA better than Doc Rivers.

Since the Celtics are unlikely to blow up their roster and rebuild, Garnett might as well stay for another two years and make a few more attempts to win an NBA championship.
