Euro 2012 TV Schedule: Previews and Predictions for Tuesday's Group D Finale

Sam R. QuinnJun 19, 2012

Tuesday's matches mark the last contests of group play in the 2012 European Championship and fortune has made it so they have a huge impact on which sides will advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.

England and Ukraine are set to square off in Donetsk at 2:45 p.m. ET on ESPN

The Three Lions are looking to cement a berth in the knockout stage of the tournament by grabbing three points to bring their Euro total to seven in three games. Roy Hodgson's club looked in prime form against Sweden on June 15, winning by a 3-2 score.

Ukraine has its back firmly up against the wall. While the English need only a tie to advance to the quarterfinals, the Ukrainians know they need to get a win to move in. A desperate team is extremely dangerous, but desperation can also result in defensive failures.

Player to Watch for England: Wayne Rooney

Rooney will return from his two-game suspension for the Three Lions crucial match against Ukraine. He's been the star of the English side for years now, and he can further his legacy by coming up big in this contest.

"Wazza" can do it all on the pitch. Passing, dribbling, shooting, you name it and he excels in the department. He'll be fired up for his return and his teammates will feed off of his intensity.

Rooney's presence will be exactly what England needs heading into the toughest part of their 2012 European Championship lives.

Player to Watch for Ukraine: Andriy Shevchenko

This isn't so much about watching Shevchenko on the field as it is watching to see if he can get on the field at all.

According to the New York Daily News, Shevchenko may not play against England thanks to his lingering knee injury. He has two goals so far in the tournament, both coming in the opener against Sweden to give Ukraine a 2-1 victory.

If he's not able to take the field, Ukraine's chances of winning take a serious hit.

Prediction: 2-0 England

I'm not expecting Shevchenko to be that much of a factor in this one. Long-term knee injuries seldom go unnoticed on the field, and that's going to decrease his mobility and effectiveness.

England is set to get their star back, while Ukraine could lose theirs. That's not a good sign.

France and Sweden will come to blows in Kyiv at 2:45 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Laurent Blanc and company need a win to ensure their entry to the quarterfinals. If they can only score a draw, they will be looking to the results of the England-Ukraine match, hoping that the Ukrainians don't come away with a win. It's never a good idea to leave your team's fate in the hands of another club, so Les Bleus need to get a win in this one.

That shouldn't be that hard, though. Sweden has been eliminated from advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2012 European Championship after losing the first two games of the competition. With nothing to play for but their dignity, the Swedes could play this game in two ways: fight for their pride or roll over and die.

Player to Watch for France: Franck Ribery

Franck Ribery, Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema are the three most important players for the French side in this matchup, but Ribery is the catalyst for Blanc's side.

He's a master of possession and passing, two facets of this contest that will prove to be pivotal. If France gets an early lead, don't expect Blanc to have his players push the issue of padding the lead. They could very well hang back and cling to a one-goal victory for dear life.

With Ribery, Nasri and Benzema in the middle third, the French will dominate the possession aspect of this match, leading to an easy win.

Player to Watch for Sweden: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Who else did you expect to find as the key player for Sweden?

Ibrahimovic is the key to a Swedish victory in any match they play, and this one is no different. One thing working against the Swedes in this contest is that "Ibra" doesn't always have his head in the game. It's a bit of a "what's in it for me" attitude, and there's not much in it for him in this one.

His team is already eliminated from the tournament, and this game means virtually nothing. Still, we might see the 6'5" forward work his magic.

Prediction: 1-0 France

If the French strike first, which they are likely to, this is going to be a bore of a game. They'll grab an early goal and play a game of keep away with their back line and midfielders.

I just don't see Sweden coming away the winner, as there is nothing at stake for the blue and yellow.
