US Olympic Diving Trials Results 2012: Top Qualifiers, Updates and Highlights

Ian HanfordJun 18, 2012

Four events in the U.S. Olympic diving trials got underway yesterday, with many more to come over the next week.

The United States has not won a medal from the diving platform since Laura Wilkinson claimed gold in Sydney 12 years ago. Since then, China has dominated the diving ranks.

This year's American squad doesn't feature any Olympic medal winners, but you can assess the group yourself on television throughout the week.

UPDATE: Saturday, June 23, 9:18 a.m. ET by Donald Wood

If you missed Friday’s action at the 2012 US Olympic Diving Trials, there is a lot you have to catch up on. Not only did the Synchronized Women Platform go down, the Synchronized Men 3m Springboard was also decided.

With only two teams in the synchronized women’s platform trial, the excitement was not trumped as both teams put on amazing shows. Ashley Buchter and Natalie Kalibat had the better finish, but it wasn’t by much.

Eight teams entered the synchronized men’s 3m springboard trial, but there was a clear pecking order of who would be the eventual winner. In the end, Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen proved they were the best with an amazing performance.

Male Diver to Watch: David Boudia

Boudia currently holds the silver medal in international diving's toughest event: 10-meter platform. He represents the United States' best hopes for a medal in London this summer.

He, along with his teammate Nick McCrory, are heavy favorites to earn the United States' Olympic bid.

NBC analyst and former Olympic diver Cynthia Potter had this to say in an interview with Sports Illustrated about Boudia and the men's team:

"

I don't see any roadblocks for David. [Finchum] doesn't quite have the degree of difficulty as the others, but he is in line to be competitive with Nick and David if there are any problems.

"

Female Diver to Watch: Brittany Viola

Viola will not compete until later in the week, but she may be the United States' most consistent female diver. Her platform performances nearly sent her to the Olympics in 2004 as a 17-year-old.

She's the daughter of 1988 Cy Young winner Frank Viola, and she hopes to continue her families strong athletic bloodlines well into the summer.

Viola won the 2011 winter national title and has finished in the top 20 in each of her last two world championship appearances.

She also wants to be here. She said this in an interview with Sports Illustrated: "This Olympic Trials coming up, I've been training my mind, body, spirit, soul -- everything has been in my training. I want to be at Olympic Trials, and I want to be at the Olympics."

Olympic Prediction

The United States doesn't enter the summer games with China's recent pedigree, but they will compete for sure.

Viola and Haley Ishimatsu can hold their own on the women's side of things, and the men will rely on the tandem of McCrory and Boudia.

With their combined efforts, I would be surprised if the United States didn't find themselves holding at least one medal by the time the London games draw to a close.
