Wayne Rooney is back.
After a suspension kept the star footballer out of England’s first two Group D matches, Rooney is set to return in what is basically a win-or-go-home game. If they win, they’re in. But if they tie Ukraine, then they’d need Sweden to upset France to advance, and that isn’t going to happen.
But after going undefeated without Wazza, his comeback should give England the edge. Rob Draper of the Daily Mail reported that England manager Roy Hodgson raved about Rooney and said:
"I would suggest he's a world-class player. I'm always wary of giving players epithets but I think his ability is a bit special. You are lucky as a manager of a national team to have players of his quality for selection. I have been unlucky, I think, not to have him available, just as I have been unlucky not to have Frank Lampard available. At least I'm getting one of those two players back and, hopefully, that makes life a little bit easier for us going into our next game, where we need another result.
"
Expect England to defeat a Ukraine team that was just shutout 2-0 against France on Friday.
Sweden vs. France on Tuesday, June 19th at 2:45 p.m. ET
Ukraine beat Sweden. France beat Ukraine. Sure, those outcomes don’t guarantee a French victory, but they certainly deserve to be heavy favorites heading into the matchup.
According to the Daily Mail, France coach Laurent Blanc said after his club’s first win in a major match since 2006:
"I hope the next win won't take another six years because I will be long fired by then. We dominated the game right from the start in terms of shots on target and possession. We scored twice and could have had more. We have a lot of potential.
"
Sweden has yet to win a Group D match. In their pair of losses, they surrendered five goals. Hugo Lloris and the French defense are superior to what Sweden will field and that advantage will clinch a spot in the next round for France.
