Denmark vs. Germany: Defense Will Lead to Victory for Strong German Side

Andrew KulhaJun 7, 2018

Germany will rely on their stingy defense to help them continue their winning ways at Euro 2012 as they take on Denmark.

It's often said that offense wins games, but defense wins championships, and that's been personified in the play of this very strong and talented German team. They have the talent to put up good offensive numbers if they want to, but if you were to ask me for one word to describe this squad it would simply be: defense.

Their defensive prowess was quite evident when they took on the very talented Portugal side that featured the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani and held them scoreless. The goaltending from Manuel Neuer was phenomenal and the defense was fearless and got in the way of many balls that were headed for the net.

Next, they slowed down the Netherlands, who boast Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Arsenal superstar Robin van Persie, holding them to just one goal—while notching two themselves.

The trend developing here is Germany taking on superb offensive talent and shutting them down. Whether it be by blocking shots or fearless goaltending, this squad has found a way to play stingy defense.

This is not to say that the Germans can't score, but it seems as if they're implementing a grind-it-out, low-scoring type of football that will frustrate their opponents offensively, while allowing them to capitalize on opportunities with their own offense.

Look no further than Mario Gomez for proof of that statement. Germany has only scored three goals in this tournament, but all are courtesy of Gomez, who is obviously playing very opportunistic football.

When all is said and done though, it's the defense of this squad that makes them so dangerous, and that's how they'll beat Denmark.  They'll play fundamentally sound, keep the ball in front of them on defense and rely on Neur to continue making big plays in net.

This is a trend that will work wonders at Euro 2012 and it's one that I fully expect them to continue against Denmark.
