US Open 2012: Leaderboard Updates, Highlights and More
Golf fans everywhere will be focusing on the Olympic Club in San Francisco this week, as the 112th US Open gets underway on Thursday.
There are so many storylines heading into this year's tournament. Tiger Woods is looking for his 15th major championship, Rory McIlroy needs a strong performance to resurrect his career, and Bubba Watson will be aiming for his second major of the year following his Masters triumph in April.
Also making headlines is Andy Zhang, who, at 14 years old, will be the youngest golfer to ever play in the US Open.
Check back to this article daily for leaderboard updates, video highlights, TV information and more from the Olympic Club.

Here is the final leaderboard.
| 1 | W. Simpson | +1 |
| T2 | G. McDowell | +2 |
| T2 | M. Thompson | +2 |
| T5 | J. Furyk | +3 |
| T5 | J. Dufner | +3 |
| T5 | P. Harrington | +3 |
| T5 | D. Toms | +3 |
| T5 | J. Peterson | +3 |
| 9 | E. Els | +4 |
Wade Simpson has claimed the US Open crown in his second career appearance in this particular Major. Simpson turned pro in 2008, and this definitely puts his career on the right track.
McDowell made things interesting down the stretch, but Simpson's excellent fourth round was good enough in the end.
UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 9:30 p.m. ET by Ian Hanford
Webb Simpson has finally chased down Jim Furyk's nerves with less than five holes to play. Simpson has played a breathtaking round, and he has tamed the Olympic Club's menacing difficulty.
Graeme McDowell is still one stroke back, but he has recovered from a disastrous few holes in the middle of the round.
Behind the three leaders, only two golfers have golf remaining. Ernie Els and Jason Dufner have played solid rounds, but they will need to make up ground in a hurry.
For some reason, I feel a playoff coming. Furyk can't separate himself and Simpson just has this aura about him right now.
Stay tuned for what should be an exciting conclusion.
Here is the updated leaderboard.
| T1 | J. Furyk | +1 | 14 |
| T1 | W. Simpson | +1 | 15 |
| T3 | G. McDowell | +2 | 13 |
| T3 | M. Thompson | +2 | F |
| T3 | E. Els | +3 | 17 |

UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET by Ian Hanford
Michael Thompson and David Toms have completed their US Open play, and Padraig Harrington is on the brink of finishing his fourth round as well.
Let's take a look at an updated leaderboard.
| 1 | J. Furyk | E | 11 |
| 2 | W. Simpson | +1 | 14 |
| T3 | E. Els | +2 | 13 |
| T3 | P. Harrington | +2 | 17 |
| T3 | J. Peterson | +2 | 15 |
| T6 | M. Thompson | +2 | F |
| T6 | D. Toms | +3 | F |
| T8 | G. McDowell | +3 | 11 |
| T8 | J. Dufner | +4 | 15 |
Much has changed since our last update.
Webb Simpson has taken sole possession of first place, but Jim Furyk refuses to relinquish the tournament's top spot.
Michael Thompson's 67 for the round put him in third place. That may be short lived, but he played Sunday's round with expert precision. His short game was on point, and he drove the ball off the tee with tremendous accuracy.
The tournament is winding down, my head is spinning and the leaderboard is still a muddled mess.
Stay tuned for more updates from the US Open.
UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 5:55 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Well, things are getting interesting at the Olympic Club. The leaders are beginning to crumble. Graeme McDowell is now three-over for the day, and Jim Furyk is one-over on his round.
This leaves Furyk at even par and two shots ahead of several golfers, including McDowell, at +2.
While Furyk has a nice little cushion, he is getting increasingly errant off the tee, and that lead could vanish in a second.
Included in the group that is two back is Ernie Els. The Big Easy is even through eight holes and looking strong.
Lee Westwood would be in that group at two-over, but he teed off on No. 5, and his ball never came down. Amazingly it stuck in the same tree that once held Lee Janzen's ball for minutes before releasing it safely to the ground.
Westwood had to take a lost ball penalty and double bogeyed the hole. He is now at four-over for the tournament.
Feel free to check out the full leaderboard here.

UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 5:55 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Jim Furyk and Graeme McDdowell are not just going to hand this title over. The front-running pair is off to a solid start as they are both at even for the day after two holes, and none of their closest competitors are making a move to catch them.
They now have a three-stroke lead on Lee Westwood and Fredrik Jacobson. If the duo can emerge from the ultra-tough opening six holes without dropping a stroke to the course, it will be very hard for anyone to catch them.
Feel free to check out the full leaderboard here, and check out the top 13 below as they prepare to hit the course.

UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 5:55 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Well, Tiger Woods is not going to stage an epic Sunday comeback. He is four over after four holes and is now at +8 for the tournament. His collapse is staggering, and his game is getting worse by the shot.
Almost all of the golfers are now on the course, but there isn't a lot of moving going on yet. After all, the first six holes of this course are about surviving and not making up ground.

UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 4:17 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
The leaders aren't on the course yet, but if the early results are any indication, they will be well served to scrape together an even par round.
This course has yet to be tamed, and they Sunday is not going to be any different. There are 73 golfers who have finished at least a hole in the final round, and only four of them are under par, and none of those four is more than one-under.
Currently hitting the first tee box is the group of golfers tied at five-over.

UPDATE: Sunday, June 17 at 2:40 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Happy father's day to all the dads out there. You should have an excellent day of golf to help you enjoy this day.
There are 17 golfers within five strokes of the lead. A number that is even more impressive considering that the co-leaders have a two-stroke lead. Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell are tied at the top at -1.
If both of these guys stumble on this difficult course, there is a very real chance that the winner of this tournament will not be under par. That puts all the golfer sitting at three and four over right in the thick of this event.
This course is not going to be any easier for these guys today. There are currently 24 golfers through at least one hole for today's round. Only one of those guys, Patrick Cantlay, is under par for the day, and he is only through one hole.
You can check out the full leaderboard here, and here is how the top 13 stand (none of these guys are on the course yet).

UPDATE: Saturday, June 16 at 10:30 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Well that didn't go like many expected. Tiger Woods fell apart during the third round and Jim Furyk held strong.
Woods fired off a five-over 75 to push his tournament score to +4. That is five shots off the lead the Furyk shares with 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell.
The pair have a two shot lead over Nicolas Colsaerts who is alone in second place.
Woods struggled with his distance all day. His shots that were on line were coming up short. He hung in there, but the frustration definitely got to him. He finished with a bogey on 18 that was in large part to a duffed chip that would have angered the average hacker.
Meanwhile, McDowell's confidence is soaring. He was steady and consistent firing a 68 and you have to like his chances going into Sunday.
However, this course is still destroying golfers, and that is going to make for an exciting Sunday. A player's confidence can fly out the window quickly as one bad shot can set off a chain reaction of destruction.

UPDATE: Saturday, June 16 at 9:28 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Jim Furyk is hanging with a death grip, and he is the only player under par. After an up and down day, Furyk has steadied with four straight pars. He is through 15 at one-under for the tournament.
Graeme McDowell is now alone in second, as Nicolas Colsaerts dropped a shot to fall to one-over. Tiger continues to be slightly off, but he is just three shots off the lead.
John Peterson is in 13th place at four over through the tournament. He is 15 holes through his third round. He has five bogeys and no birdies. However, he does have this:

UPDATE: Saturday, June 16 at 8:32 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
Jim Furyk and Nicolas Colsaerts are the only players not on the wrong side of par. The two are sitting at even par and hold a one-stroke lead over Graeme McDowell, who is the only player at +1.
After a rough start, that saw him bogey four of the first eight holes, Tiger Woods has steadied a bit. He birdied No. 9 and parred No. 10.
Woods isn't playing terrible. He is just a fraction off with his distance on his irons and in the short game.
Ernie Els is giving us all a blast from the blast. Els caught fire and eagled the 17th before narrowly missing a birdie on No. 18. He is now at +2.

UPDATE: Saturday, June 16 at 7:37 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
The Olympic Club is winning. Despite a third round that features light winds and perfect conditions, not one golfer is under par for the tournament.
There were three such golfers to begin the day, but they have all struggled. There are four golfers tied for first at +1, and not one of them is named Tiger Woods.
After taming the most difficult opening six holes in major championship history, he was even on these holes for the first two rounds, Tiger has gone +3 through these in Round 3. He is now one shot off the lead at +2.
Fredrik Jacobson is one of the day's big movers. He is two under on the day through 11 holes, and were it not for a couple of missed putts, he would be in the lead. As it is, he is tied at +1.

UPDATE: Saturday, June 16 at 6:37 p.m. ET by Richard Langford
All of the players are on the course and things are tightening up. Beginning third round play, there were just three golfers under par. Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and David Toms were tied at one-under, and no one was at even par.
It didn't take long for the course to make sure no one was under par as the three leaders found early struggles.
They all bogeyed the first hole, and Toms bogeyed two of the first three. Woods and Furyk are now in first at even.

UPDATE: Friday, June 15th at 10:17 p.m. EDT by Austin Green
After another nightmarish day, it's starting to look like a four-round score of even-par will win somebody the 2012 US Open.
Only three golfers are under par through the first two rounds, with Tiger Woods, David Toms and Jim Furyk sharing the lead at one-under. Woods and Toms both shot an even 70 on the day, while the 2003 US Open champion Fuyrk dropped a one-under 69.
Thursday's leader, Michael Thompson, is still in the hunt despite a rough outing in Round 2. He had three bogeys and two double-bogeys on his way to a five-over 75.
The best round of the day went to Steve Stricker, who hit a two-under 68. Unfortunately, he shot a 76 on Thursday, so he and eight other golfers are tied for 19th at four-over par.
Despite the brilliance of Stricker, Woods and the rest, the story of the tournament has been Beau Hossler. The 17-year-old held the lead for a brief period on Friday, and he's currently sitting in the top ten at three-over par. Hossler hit several ridiculous shots, saving himself on the few times he did get in trouble.
Hossler was so good through the first two rounds that he overshadowed superstars like Rory McIlroy (+10), Bubba Watson (+9) and Luke Donald (+11), all of whom missed the cut.
The 2012 US Open will continue on Saturday. Until then, I'll leave you with the updated leaderboard and this nasty chip-in from Tim Herron. Enjoy.

UPDATE: Thursday, June 14th at 11:30 p.m. EDT by Josh Martin
Ugly scores ruled the opening round of the US Open on Thursday. Only six of the 156-man field finished under par on the day, including Tiger Woods, who entered the clubhouse at one under par after shooting a 69. Michael Thompson, a 27-year-old who hasn't played in a Major championship since the 2008 US Open, ended the day atop the leaderboard at four-under.
The lower regions of the big board, though, are littered with some of golf's biggest names languishing in the black. From Phil Mickelson (six-over, T93) and Bubba Watson (eight-over, T125) to Rory McIlroy (seven-over, T110) and Luke Donald (nine-over, T140), few could handle the fast greens and sharp slants that made life at the Olympic Club so frustrating for so many.
The course wasn't any kinder to 14-year-old Andy Zhang, who shot a nine-over 79 in his first round as the youngest player to ever partake in a US Open.
With this year's cut changed from the 10-shot rule to the top 60 with ties, that could mean more than a handful of the sport's biggest names heading home for the weekend.
Here's a look at the top of the leaderboard after Day 1:
| Player | To Par | Thru |
| 1. Michael Thompson | -4 | F |
| T2. Graeme McDowell | -1 | F |
| T2. Nick Watney | -1 | F |
| T2. Justin Rose | -1 | F |

| T7. Ian Poulter | E | F |

Round 1 Player to Watch
Tiger Woods will be the player to watch in Round 1, because a fast start for Tiger could be bad news for the entire field at the Olympic Club.
A solid Round 1 would be amazing for Woods' confidence and belief that he can end his major drought this weekend at the US Open.
