NBA Free Agency: 5 Free Agents Who Will Be Hard to Pass Up
With the NBA season winding down, free agency seems to be a popular topic for NBA teams that have holes to fill. There are many possible free agent targets for many teams to take a look at and possibly scoop up a big name.
Although some of the big name players seem very likely to re-sign with their current team, that does not make them untouchable by any means.
The 2011-2012 NBA season was a shorter season with many players trying to prove themselves before possibly running into a large payday in the offseason.
Here are my five free agents that many teams will be interested in and will be taking home a big check.
Deron Williams
1 of 5The 27-year-old point guard is a hot commodity in the free agent market. He is regarded by many as one of the best point guards in the league and proves that year after year with his solid numbers.
He signed last year with the New Jersey Nets and is currently unhappy. He wanted another big-name player besides Gerald Wallace to join him in Brooklyn next season, but it looks as if that's not going to happen.
Deron Williams is an unrestricted free agent and will be looking to play for a contender next season. With his career 18-point and nine assists per game numbers, he will be making big money once the 2012-2013 season begins, not in Brooklyn, however.
Kevin Garnett
2 of 5Kevin Garnett is a very solid NBA veteran that could help a lot of teams looking for an older presence.
Although many teams will be looking at him just for experience, he knows he can still play at a high level. He wants to play for a team that respects that and can put him in the starting lineup and watch him go at it.
Granted, his numbers were down this season compared to his career averages, but the big man rose to the occasion when it mattered the most: the playoffs.
He nearly matched his career averages in almost every category and proved that his career isn't nearly over. If the Celtics don't resign him next year, they could be making a big mistake.
Steve Nash
3 of 5Another big point guard on the market during the free agent period. Nash is widely considered the best passer the league has had in years. He leaves defenses shredded when he drives to the lane and kicks a no-look pass to another player.
Nash is approaching the age of 40 and could possibly retire within the next couple of years, but for now, he wants to win a championship. Although he's not the scorer he was at the beginning of his career, the veteran point guard averages over 10 assists per game.
Anybody who can average 10-plus assists a game for his career, deserves a spot on any team. He still has game and he wants to prove that for any team willing to take him in since the Suns may not take a chance on him.
Tim Duncan
4 of 5Yes, the Spurs are getting old, but that does not mean they aren't contenders year after year.
They finished the 2011-2012 regular season with the best record in the league, but were bounced out in the Western Conference Finals by the emerging youth of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Spurs are aging, and so is Tim Duncan. Although Duncan in now 36-years-old, he can play ball like he has been for years. Many free agents on the market this year are aging veterans, but they can all still play.
Duncan is no different, he led the Spurs deep into the playoffs and proved to the league that he is still a premier NBA center. Look for the Spurs to re-sign him and make another deep run next season.
Chauncey Billups
5 of 5The 35-year-old point guard from Colorado has been the staple for a solid NBA player. He began his career as an average point guard bouncing from team to team looking for a place who needed a solid backup.
The Detroit Pistons gave him a chance and his career blossomed. The former NBA Finals MVP joined the Clippers last season before injuring himself 20 games into the season.
He is one of the league's best at the position and can help any NBA team. He has a great three-point shot and can drive to the lane with force. Yes, the Clippers already have Chris Paul, but Billups has taken a backseat and has agreed to play shooting guard.
With Billups and Paul in the same starting lineup, there won't be too many teams who can stop a one-two punch like that in the backcourt. If the Clippers don't resign him, he will make big money somewhere else.
