Manchester United: Do the Red Devils Actually Need to Sign Lewandowski?

Simon EdmondsJun 7, 2018

The rumours have been spreading like wildfire since the start of Euro 2012, and one that has particularly gripped the fans of Manchester United is the possible move for Poland and Borussia Dortmund front man, Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski is seen as one of the hottest prospects in world football at the current moment in time, playing an integral part in Dortmund's back-to-back Bundesliga titles.

On top of this, his record with the national team has made him a name to be feared within international football also, netting 15 goals so far for his country, aged just 23.

Without doubt, bringing a player of Robert's undoubted quality to Old Trafford, at the same time in which his former teammate Shinji Kagawa has joined United, would be a prosperous move for both parties.

But the real question is, do Manchester United actually need the Polish Talisman in their ranks right now?

Certainly United already have three very good, and more importantly established, Premier League strikers in their side.

Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez have proven over the past couple of years (well, Rooney for about a decade now) that they are good enough to go toe to toe with any forward in the English top flight when it comes to scoring and outright ability.

Bringing in Lewandowski at this period could really hinder the progression of Welbeck and Hernandez, who are still at a fledgling stage of their careers.

Danny Welbeck was fantastic in England's 1-1 draw with France yesterday, surpassing the talents of the highly rated Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery.

This is the kind of form he has been showing all season for United, and bringing in someone like Lewandowski could really halt all the progression Danny has been making up to this point.

The exact same thing can be said for Chicharito who, although perhaps not shining as brightly as he did in his début season at Old Trafford, is still a player with a magnificent future ahead of him with United.

One of these men will become almost completely forgotten about if the signing of Lewandowski does eventually come to fruition.

Another risk with the potential move for the Pole, is the fact that he has no experience in the slightest of Premier League football.

This is always a concern when bringing in a player from a different national division and, although the Bundesliga in recent seasons has proven it is possibly the third best league currently operating in Europe (behind Spain and England), the step up may be a lot to ask straight away.

I was prompted to write on and consider this point because of several good points put forward by fans of the Manchester United community on Bleachers.

By that I mean to say, sure, at first the glamorous signing of a player of Lewandowski's current pedigree seems very appealing to the average fan.

But when you peel back the glossy coat and examine the repercussions of this deal, it could in reality have a very negative effect on United's current strike force.

Not to say that if it does eventually happen it would be disastrous, but perhaps this is a move that does not need to be made by Sir Alex in this ever on-going battle of footballing chess.

Of course, if Lewandowski nets a few goals later against the impressive looking Russians, maybe the stance on this ever controversial striker will change again!
