Chelsea after Scolari: Walk, Run Or Drive??

Saju MatthewFeb 9, 2009

On a fine sunny morning at Stamford Bridge, Luiz Felipe Scolari was given the job almost similar to what Barack Obama received four months later. Yes, the 60-year-old Brazilian was given a 'package' of expectations.

Seven months since then, he has been axed from the job, because he was found not capable of meeting those expectations.

It was a decision not merely based on Chelsea's draw at home to Hull City, perhaps, such a measure would have been taken on the team's lack of quality display during the past couple of months.

The owner/management decided to dismiss Avram Grant after the 'tragic' slip of a leg from the captain, John Terry.

Was that a prudent decision? He came at a time, when the club was struggling with rebellion during the start of the season. He re-charged the team with what he had, and lost the premiership title to Man Utd by the slightest of difference.

He made the team to claim the most prestigious of all, the Champions League which got slipped away by a foot. In a way, that was just short of owner's expectations!!

Chelsea's ability to move beyond, towards success, was literally written off by that action. Scolari was instead given the job to start from scratch. I will say, that was Chelsea's failed expectation.

Who can take Chelsea from this point onwards? Guus Hiddink is a favorable candidate, at least on the table of the owner, Abromovich. But can he instigate the sense of total display, which is the need of the hour, among the players?

The owner may weigh down his expectations because of Russian link, but, what about the players? What about the fans?

There has been a sort of lack of proper communication between Scolari and the players or between the players which has resulted in poor displays.

Anelka, for instance, might not have been happy to go back when Drogba gets in. Lampard may not have been able to connect with Deco or Ballack to get the ball ahead. Scolari's known tactic of Brazilian style might not have been accepted by the defenders.

Communication and understanding among players is very much required as is evident from how Rooney goes behind to pave the way for Ronaldo to strike. The team must play like a wave with sudden, but short, amendments on the field, which ultimately confuse the opposing side.

The 'Man on Demand' right now will be Avram Grant.

He is a man who can deliver positive results for teams who are in two extremes;

Portsmouth, facing relegation and Chelsea, is highly likely to lose out of next season's Champions League. Remember, it was he who took the Blues from 'nowhere' in 2007.

Pompeys on the other hand are also in the same situation.

For Grant, an offer from Pompeys right now could take him there, as he can get back to an English job. But will he wait for a call from his former team? That is less likely as he had to depart from Chelsea after filing a suit for the deflated compensation pay.

Former Chelsea star Zola would have accepted the rumour itself, but that is too late now.

Frank Reijkaard, another probable candidate, can only deliver with big stars from the beginning.

Hiddink may be comfortable with his boss, but not necessarily with the players.

The worst part of English football is their "dependence" on foreign owners, coaches and players. If one looks at the premiership-domestic teams, how many on the top list does have domestic deciding factors?

Unless and otherwise that is changed, the home of football will later come to be known as "Foreign-Home of Football."
