Would LeBron James Be Less Interesting as NBA Champion?
If we live in a world that lives to see LeBron James fail, what would the possible impact be in the case that James actually won an NBA title?
It's a question that's admittedly premature given what's left to be decided in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals (and even then, the entirety of a potential NBA Finals against an incredibly formidable opponent), but with today coinciding with perhaps the most favorable media coverage James has received since his move to Miami, it seems a question worthy of a moment's consideration.
I'm mildly curious to see just how hard James' stock would fall back to Earth in the case of an eventual loss (particularly considering the incredible playoff run he's had), but I'm more engrossed in the idea of a post-title aftermath. Right now, the media (and fan) culture surrounding James is still relatively static, and disappointingly tone-deaf. Improved, certainly, but still a bit too unreasonable for my tastes.
Yet if LeBron were to go on to win a championship this season (again: hardly a given), I'm not sure the world would quite know what to do with itself.
Would James be considered redeemed? Would the world move on to find a new lightning rod? Would the pressure only be magnified, as James would not only be required to be a champion, but a defending champion?
Or, at the root of all of those hypotheticals, if LeBron wins the title, would we ultimately find him less interesting?
