NFL Draft Rumors: True or False?

Talking Dallas Cowboys with Steven Mullenax from 'The Landry Hat'

Jun 7, 2018

A few key themes have highlighted the Dallas Cowboys' offseason. And so in our first blogger-meets-blogger discussion featuring the 'Boys with Steven Mullenax from The Landry Hat, I was sure to touch on the battle for the No. 3 receiver spot, Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware's potential decline and a possible Mike Jenkins trade.

Bleacher Report: Naturally, I'm curious to find out who you favor in the No. 3 wide receiver battle. Who do you want to win the job, and who do you think the majority of fans want to win the job? I don't buy for a second that Kevin Ogletree can win it, but I'm also afraid to buy into the hype on Andre Holmes.

Steven Mullenax: Ogletree has the advantage of experience, and the Cowboys have poured years of training and time into him. But ultimately, I believe the third wide receiver position will become almost irrelevant this year. Barring injury, I see Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten's numbers going up next season, and that will make up for the loss of Laurent Robinson.

B/R: I've taken some heat for stating that Tony Romo is a better quarterback than Eli Manning, regardless of the Super Bowls. Obviously Manning deserves more praise, but I'd rather have Romo on my team. As a Cowboys fan, do you see things the same way, or have you soured on Romo? Who would you rather have as your quarterback in 2012?

SM: I'll take Romo in the first three quarters and Manning in the final one. Romo is missing that "clutch" gene that Manning seems to possess in spades. That's why Manning has the wins and the rings. If Romo can become more of a clutch player, I'm with him all the way. But for now, Manning is simply more clutch, hence better.

B/R: I'm a bit concerned about DeMarcus Ware. I know he's only being held out of OTAs as a precaution, but this isn't the first time he's been bothered by neck problems. Are you worried at all about a decline?

SM: If I'm concerned about anything, it's about his age. Ware turned 30 this year. I believe we'll see a decline in his abilities after the next couple seasons. His window is definitely closing.

B/R: The Cowboys would be crazy to trade Mike Jenkins, unless of course they get an unreal offer. Nothing's guaranteed with Morris Claiborne, who hasn't even played a practice snap yet, and injuries happen. If they trade him now, I can see them regretting it in November or December. Agree or disagree?

SM: I agree with that. Let's not forget: The two new and apparently starting cornerbacks have not played one single snap as Dallas Cowboys...ever. Having two veteran corners with experience within the system is invaluable.

Plus, Mike Jenkins is practically a steal salary cap-wise at just over a million this season. And with Dallas' salary cap issues, that's a bargain Jerry Jones will not want to part with. The only way I see a trade happening is if Dallas can get a quality safety or the additional pass rush specialist they desperately need. And one who is willing to restructure their contract.
